| I love this song! I think it is about trying to make the best out of life. Even when it can be hard. We all have good days and bad days and why in the hell not try to smile? It might actually MAKE you feel happy when you feel blue. I don't think it is being fake to smile if you truly feel like smiling. Sob when you need to sob. Frown when you are pissed off. And smile when you have a fucked up thought in your head or when you simply feel euphoric! | |

I think this song is about someone who experienced a rude awakening. I think this king held the belief that everyone is inherently good- and sadly now realizes this is not true. He has lived a long life and has enjoyed the friendship of scores of very unique friends. He has traveled a lot and has met many different types of people. Never before had he experienced raw ugliness. He is one who always tries to see the positive side of life and find the good qualities in people. He has seen so much beauty in the world and has also experienced much sadness. But, with all of the sadness he has experienced he had never come across people who were purposely hurtful and cruel. He was on top of the world when he thought everyone was trying their best to do the right thing. He felt low when he found out that he had a friend or two who felt the need to assemble a group in order to try and hurt him in a deceitful way. He was trying to work through things peacefully. Maybe he had simply removed himself from this person's life.... For me, the take away from this song is to try your best not to hurt people. Try not to lie. Try to work things out face to face. You are the role model for your children and for future generations so as CSN sings, "Teach Your Children Well". Always try to take the high road. Try to make the world a better place. Even when an army tries to bring you down. |
