I know this song was writtian for Underworld and that it's probly about vampire's (since alex seems to have quite the facination with them) but does anyone think it could be a song about the power of drugs? Hold your breath. quiet now don't say a word. You could run (but) it wont do any good. Prayers forsaken. when you lose faith inside. Its not time to die. A person could try to run away from their problem, but it's always going to follow. That craving for the drug will always be there and it's a way for comfort when the person is upset. Your life. Is it a lie. When you get what you're looking for. Will your cravings subside. Or will you crawl into A homemade-casket An early tomb Lay down And give up inside She'd rather die The first part could be about a person trying to get clean but they still have those wants for the drug. They think they're living a lie because they're not living with the drug even though the drug is distructive to them. If they go back to the drug, they will die in an early grave, giving up the hope that things will get better. When you fall So spent from emotion She is what Brings you to your Feet Where challenges lie On the verge of destruction She pulls you back And she gives you wings When the person is at their lowest and everything seems so wrong, the drug can be what pulls them up again, it gives them a reason to live. A lot of drugs like herion are refered to as "she" also so thats also how I thought of it. Death wont hold you. As tight as she will. Can you feel her Burning through your veins She will always Live forever Can you bear the burden The first lines here are what really made me think it was refering to drugs. When someone has an addiction, not even the fear of death stops them from using. While the drug is going through you it can have a sensation crawling up your veins but it's really 'burning' because it's harming you. The drug influence will always be there and it is quite a burden to hide and live with the addction. And you'll turn your back And you'll patronize She's pleading And you will question Your every want Shes bleeding out And this is about when the person does want to get clean finally, how they'll reject the drug and watch themselves more closely. The drug will be bleeding out of your system while one detox and withdrawl. Just my insight on it :] |

I think this song is an insight into Alex's mind. I've heard and seen that he really doesn't like cameras and he can be slightly socially awkward sometimes. I've heard he's a little bit of a loner if he's in the right moods and stuff like that. Thats why Brandon and Dan do a lot of the interviews. Alex has also talked about how he's struggled with depression and drugs and stuff like that, trying to live without anti-depressants and trying to balance his life. I think this is his admitance to him being afraid of himself and his success. "restless chasing shadows" He's constantly fighting back his old skeletons and his problems in his mind "choices facing gallows pole" the choices he makes can be ones that really hurt or save him. "are you hanging by a thread or swinging from the rope" Is he barely holding on? or is he already dead and swinging there, has he already given in to his old ways? "dont think we dont see your scars are you afraid of who you are?" His scars are always there as a reminder of who he was and who he's trying to avoid being. I love alex though, I'm not ragging on him. He writes some of the most amazing lyrics and he's really funny and one of the nicest people I've heard. Plus he can scream like a motherfucker. |

| Taking Back Sunday – Brooklyn (If You See Something, Say Something) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

What I love about TBS is that they really leave a lot of the lyrics open to personal interpretation. This song, to me, is about someone whose trying to tell someone else that they love them, but they just don't know how. They want the other person to figure it out and have them say it first or realize that the person doesn't know how to say it. "If you see something then just say something." He feels like he's let a lot of time waste away and he regrets it "Sad and in love, hands trembled of life that we would have stolen. Anyway, stolen. Well, anyway." And he thinks that he's not the best man out there, that there are other's better than him "Well you are worth more than the man I am." and "Of better men, of better men than me." But when he finally gets that reaction from the other person, he wants it to be honest, not a staged response. He wants it "genuine and unprepared." He feels like he's trapped in what's familiar and home "to brooklen I'm homebound, a trap to the easy." and that he can't get out of that trap. It symbolizes his fear of breaking out of the safe state he's in with the friend and telling them his feelings. The second verse is about how well he knows the other. The "something awful itches in these walls" refers to his feelings and how they're trapped and wanting to get out. "Found a subtle genious in that white, hot, hatred of yours." this line is quite open. it could refer to when they first met and got to know each other and how he looked passed the outside and saw the true person. "Misuse is practiced, perfected, and played." Maybe he's done wrong trying to get the other to see his feelnigs or he's fucked up in one way or another. "In time I'm gonna get what's mine." He's confident either the person will return his feelings or he'll be able to live with the outcome that comes from it. of course there's many ways to interpret the song, this is just mine :] i think the whole 9/11 theory is quite interesting and could be a possibility. |

| Story of the Year – Sidewalks Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I agree with pillpopper. This song greatly relates to me right now and I really love it. Sidewalks are a symbol of childhood, mostly that young teenager age where you had to walk everywhere instead of being able to drive. I remember walking all through my neighborhood with my close friends just to have something to do. It shows a solid point in someone's life, a constant that's always there to guide. I think the song is about when you grow apart from the people you've grown up with, the people who've been in your same grade school since the 1st grade and those who've lived in your neighborhood with you. The part of the front porch shows those times when you were a kid with nothing to do and your just sitting there, watching the passers by and just daydreaming. It lets into the image of innocence in a way and it all eventually dies with time. And it also shows how kids are in such a hurry. When I was a young teen I constantly wanted to be able to drive so I wouldn't have to rely on my parents so much, and now I almost miss that childhood ignorance, that hope and wanting feeling. It can also be about a falling out between too close childhood friends. Me and my best friend are slowly growing apart since he moved away and I'm going to college soon. I'll be leaving behind the sidewalks that used to mean so much and that I really do miss. We used to sit on my front porch all the time too and just talk and laugh. It's definatly a comming of age song. It's a beatuiful song and the aol acoustic unplugged version is just so amazing, look it up on youtube if you havn't heard it yet. |
