Mos Def – Astronomy (8th Light) Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is full of great references. I like your third eye and five pillars of Islam. When I heard the "8th light" it made me think of the "Prophesy of the 8th Fire" it is a Anishinabe prophesy that predicts many races coming together on this continent. It sounds like a stretch but the "Panther" reference and the connections between the Black Panther and the Red Power Movements make it less of a stretch. Also I've just gotta add I love the "Black is the color of my true love's hair" line. It comes from an Irish folk song called "Black is"

Bob Dylan – Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again Lyrics 16 years ago
The mixing or words "smoked my eyelids and punched my cigarette", the strange things that happen that he talks about as if they were normal occurrences, and the vivid mini plots that are incomplete or somehow mysterious make me think that each verse is a mini daydream or nightmare (Dylan calls them blues). He is having these dreams in Mobile about people or events that happened in Memphis. The only problem I've had with my theory is that Dylan is not from either of these places or even the south for that matter. Someone mentioned earlier that this song could be about Dylan's transition from acoustic to electric. I like that idea. So instead of dreams about the literal places Mobile = traditional folk style of music, Memphis = rock and roll electric music, and "blues" are his daydreams about them and people's reactions. Dylan is stuck in his image as a folk singer but what he wants to do is just play electric music for a change and he doesn't see what the big deal is. "Oh, mama, could this really be the end?"
