The Shins – A Comet Appears Lyrics 16 years ago
He doubts himself, not God. This is obvious when one considers the uber-man line.

"They shone a chlorine light on..." Mercer refers to harsh critiques of others, be they professional or otherwise. Be they real or imaginary. "Let's carve my aging face off..." He suggests a dramatic, and likely sarcastic, solution to the displeasure of others.

"Close your eyes..." An act of gathering patience. He performs a task to please others. "Never worked so long and hard to cement a failure..."

"We can blow on our thumbs and posture..." We maintain airs of grandeur, but the effect this has on others is not always what was intended.

"With burnt sage and a forest of bygones..." He makes an effort to become a better person, "A list of things I could lay the blame on..." but is ultimately selfish about the whole thing.

"But with each turn, it stays front and center..." He is aware of always his own failings, again, be they real or imaginary. "Every post you can hitch your faith on..." One never fully escapes the self-doubt and insecurity, no matter how great you or or anyone else tells you you are.

"And still to come..." He feels like a terrible person, and is afraid of becoming apathetic to the fact.

The man has an amazing grasp of metaphor. I especially dig the chlorine light bit.
