Many of Will Hoge's songs are based in his own life, albeit some are more fictionalized than others. I saw one of his live shows in Chattanooga, Tennessee not long after he debuted this song, almost a year before the album was released, and he more or less said that it's about himself, touring the country with a crazy band, before meeting his wife. Of course, it's a bit of an everyman song, no doubt relatable by many men who have settled down into a stable life after their own bad ol' days. Thematically, this is something Hoge has visited before, such as "Too Old To Die Young" from the Number Seven album. It reminds me a bit of John Mellencamp, songs like "Cherry Bomb" and "Little Pink Houses", reflecting fondly on younger, more carefree times. |
