| Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Cuckoos are known for laying their eggs in other birds' nests, so the young must grow up feeling that they don't quite fit in with their surroundings. That's what I've always thought the title meant- "I'm an outsider". Reading through the lyrics now I'd guess that he's been made to feel like an intruder in what he thought was his own nest. Perhaps a feeling that's always niggled him- "My trouble raised its ugly head, I was revealed". It could well be about Isobel Campbell, as could several other B&S songs. If all these songs really are about her it's no wonder she left, she must have found life quite stifling if Stuart Murdoch had such strong feelings about her. |

| Belle & Sebastian – A Century of Elvis Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Elvis is a cat for sure, and not a stray one because he's got a collar. The collar might have a name tag or Elvis might be the name they've given him. It's quite common for cats to visit other people's houses and then go home for supper. The speaker isn't used to cats, so finds the cat's behaviour a bit strange at first. He soon warms to it though. Sometimes they talk about the cat as if he IS Elvis but they don't really believe it, it's just a kind of game. His dad isn't dead, you don't say "I haven't told him" about somebody who is dead, you say "I didn't tell him" or "I never told him". I think people read too much into this. It's just a stream of consciousness about a cat that visits sometimes. |
