For me i think this song is about the severe continuous depression he experienced in the post OK Compuer period. If you image your skull is a large empty warehouse with you standing at the centre, then the main synth bounces around off the walls creating an intense mix of frantic emotions. The melody reverberates through-out the song it is quite sharp although, slightly subtle, it adds to the feeling of desperation. I think this fits with the title everything in its right place, which isnt necessarily an accurate description, but gives the impression of person being frantic, neurotic, twitchy, worrying, unhappy (thom yorke i guess).
'Yesterday i woke up sucking on lemons' seems to describe the emotions felt through everyday, he woke up like this, he goes to bed like this. Sucking a lemon makes you imagine Pugface (i think) from the beano, had bascially a funny expression, like his eyes are coming out of his head. So its just showing this unending desperation, with large areas of his life.
'There are two colours in my head' follows this theme. Although, the song has few lyrics i dont think theres a mysterious key that helps to unlock meaning in the other lines. I think like most electronic instrumental music rather than having a specific meaning it tries to show moods and emotions. I think thom uses his voice in Kid A more like an instrument, and although the lyrics are deep and full of meaning, i think think the way they sound is just as important. For instance, the rhythm to the lyrics, the way they link in more closely to the music, trying to make music that is just catchy melody.
I dont quite understand where clone babies came from, i think Radiohead are normal people and there music is about human emotions, depression being a large focus. However, somebody did post about this being about moving on from depression and organising your life, things getting better, this makes me less sure of my view. |
