I'd love to know the actual story behind this song. so powerful. I lost a close friend to suicide a few years back, & this entire song hits me hard. Not wanting to drag out the funeral (cause they wouldn't want you to), having nightmares, etc. "You know the fucked up part is I kind of always knew we'd have to write a song about this You know the fucked up part is I had my fingers crossed that it wouldn't be for you, kid." Brings me to tears every time... my favorite thing about TWY is the ability to relate to the songs, but this is one I hope very few can relate to =[ |

One of my favorite songs of all time. I can't imagine this NOT being about President Bush. He cited religion for all the atrocities he committed, namely the war. (wearing his religion like a war sweater) Tying into the war, he sat on his fences, meaning he tried to straddle the line between conservatives & liberals to get everyone to go along with him, & he "screamed no retreat" by not withdrawing our troops. So this song is pretty much saying, how will he be remembered? (what will his legacy be?) since he was so concerned about a legacy. This was my immediate interpretation, & everything seems to line up so well... of course, it can also apply to all radical christians, but I think it was aimed at Bush with the specifics... |

ah i adore this song. "all bad things get known... & I know about you" is SUCH a great line. I see this as begin about his love's infidelity. He found out, obviously not from her, & is calling her out on it because she still assumes he doesn't know. |
