I see it as the singer doesn't want to fade out, and they feel like they are, and like people aren't noticing him, like he's in the background. "I would choose the darkest horse" - he has the tendency to fade into the background "stables would be shadowy, we'd start the race behind" - he would be hidden and not a favorite win "They'd take their feet, and toss their hats, and yell out in surprise" - but he would push through and win, despite the odds- show people that he is successful and worthwhile. so pretty similar to what brandonterrill said :) |
