Personally, I think it is more to do with the cult of celebrity and how people are obsessed with the way celebs look. Thats why he has chucked in the Gok Wan reference as one of the people who feeds this addiction. It may also be that he is still thankful for being here, in one piece after the things he has done to himself. Also, that his search for someone to love is coming to an end as he has found someone who can 'take it' when he is naked!! |

I think this has more to do with the time when it was written. Late 80's and The Tories had been in power for far too long, it was a few years before Mrs T stepped down and most of the country either loved her or hated her. I saw this live at the Mean fiddler when the ambulance service were on strike. Obviously, the band were supporting them. 'Just you laugh, cause you're loaded' is a reference to the 'greed is good culture which was prevelant at the time, not caring too much about everyone else who had very little. 'You eat and you drink and you dress as if no one else did' echoing the same sentiments. |

This song is the definitive Deacon Blue song, the one they don't have to actually sing anymore when they do it live. I have heard them do this many times and never fails to have an effect. I think that this song is just about the dignity of having a job in our society, having something useful to contribute. But it is also about having a dream and being more than people assume you to be. Its about what he is going to do once he has stopped working and feels he has earned his rest. Its a a brilliant song which speaks to every hard working individual. Very much from Ricky Ross's background, work hard and earn your recreation. |
