Bloodhound Gang – You're Pretty When I'm Drunk Lyrics 15 years ago
Since nobody has mentioned it yet, the song's meaning is very clear. A guy goes out with his friends, finds a women he thinks is hot, but he's drunk. He gets somewhere to have sex with her to realize that she's actually really fat, but goes for it anyway.

Smash Mouth – Sister Psychic Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is actually more about a bad relationship where the singer thinks his girlfriend is cheating on him than about Ms. Cleo. I believe it just uses Ms. Cleo as a theme.

"Sister Psychic won't you tell me does it ever get better
Can you really see the future or just predict the weather"

This part fits the Ms. Cleo theme, of course, and sets the tone for the rest of the song.

"Are we in our finest hour or headed for disaster
Use your super powers and rescue me"

This does, too, obviously, but instead of thinking the first line is something about a literal disaster, I think it's about his relationship.

"We were there at the start we've got Polaroids to prove it
Skateboards and scars and embarrassing home movies"

Him and his girlfriend have pictures of their first time meeting, and perhaps they met at a skate park where neither of them knew how to skate, hence the scars and embarrassing movies.

"But if you really wanna see where it's all goin'
Switch on your T.V. she's all tellin' all known'
She knows everything"

Perhaps the singer decides to call Ms. Cleo or another phone psychic to see if he can fix his relationship.

"Can you help us find the ones on the missing posters
Is my baby being true, am I doin' what I'm supposed to"

The singer is the one who is lost, in his relationship. He thinks his girlfriend is cheating on him (as expressed in the second line), and isn't sure if it's because of what he's doing.

"Could you help me find my keys or better yet lifes meaning
Are those tarot or dialogue cards that you're reading
C'mon tell me everything"

The singer possibly finds out that the phone pyschics are just a scam. They aren't predicting the future, and they can't answer anything simple, even "where are my keys". They are just reading dialogue, not tarot.

"Sister why would I tell you my deepest dark secrets
So you could take my diary and rip it all to pieces"

The singer and his girlfriend get into an arguement - now he feels there is no point telling her all of the secrets in his life, because she will just make fun of him or use them against him.

"Just $6.95 for the very first minute
I think you've won the lottery that's my prediction"

Perhaps the character divorces his wife/girlfriend, and she wins a lot of money in the court proceedings? Or maybe it's just another shot at Ms. Cleo for giggles, I'm not sure on this one.

Either way, this is just my take on the song. :)

Streetlight Manifesto – Down Down Down to Mephisto's Cafe Lyrics 16 years ago
This is what I interpret the song to be.

"They will not remember this song
No matter what we do we'll be wrong
They will not remember this song
No matter what we do we'll be wrong"

This refers to religious folk who refuse to believe anything that isn't in the bible. You can tell them something that is a proven fact, but they won't remember it and no matter what, unless you agree with them, they believe you are wrong.

"I refuse to recognize your views
Someone shouted "Everything's for nothing"
Somebody shouted, "All is lost"
But I can't buy that nonsense too"

This is the singer saying that while I don't believe in religious views, I also don't believe that everything is for nothing or that all is lost.

"Do you think they really had a master plan
Or were they merely writing fables, stories?"

This is pretty clear cut. It says basically that there wasn't a master plan, and that the Bible is just a fable.

"I don't know but it has occurred to me
The punishment that they threaten constantly
It's only real if they could just convince me"

Here, he's saying that telling someone they are going to hell when they don't believe in hell is stupid. Why would going to hell scare him if he believes there is no hell?

"We're going down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe - Down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe - we're going down - And the gears will spin and the sinners sin, but at least we'll give them hell"

This is pretty clear, too. If there is a hell and a God, then he's a sinner, so that's where he's going, and he welcomes that. "At least we'll give them hell" means basically that even if they are wrong about religion, that before they die and get sent to hell, they're going to mess with religious folk before they do.

"And the righteous few will spit on you, so bid them all farewell"

This means that the righteous, religious folk who will go to heaven if god does exist won't help, they'll just be smug and spit on you in hell, so bid them goodbye, they aren't worth talking to.

"So fuck the flocks of sheep that keep amassing masses
Asses being led so far astray"

This is a really obvious line. Sheep are what Christians call themselves when referring to Jesus being their herder. When you realize this, "fuck the flocks of sheep" becomes pretty obvious in meaning.

"And I won't claim to believe the things I read
Black books or agenda magazine"

This is pretty clear as well. Bibles are typically black in color, so he says he won't believe things based only on what he reads. This also applies to him reading agendas - he'd rather follow his own than follow one he's read.

"I'd rather see in shades of gray"

This could be what the whole song is about. Both atheism and religion say that believing in god is either right or wrong - black and white. Neither allows a "gray area", which is what he wants.

"Now everybody's telling taller tales
And I don't know who to believe
Ok, if your father really loves you more
What about the other families?"

Fairly clear as well. All of the religions keep telling taller and taller tales to beat the others, and now the singer is getting confused. If every religion has a god that loves them the most, then what about the other gods who love everyone more?

"Finally, I met a man with kindness in his eye and fire in his heart
He said you'll never have to choose a side
It's rewarding but oh, the road is hard...."

To be honest, I don't know who or if the "man" is, but his message is clear. You don't HAVE to choose a side. This makes it harder on you, since both religious and non-religious people will bother you, but it is rewarding if you succeed.

"You can play the role of rebel
Just be sure to know your wrong from right"

This says here that it's okay to be a "rebel" - you don't have to choose a side. As long as you know your right from wrong, you can be anything you want. You don't need religion to teach you how to be a good person.

I only went after the religious message in this song - there is another underlying factor in the form of another person being discussed, but I wanted to bring up the religion point, since I believe this is the true meaning of the song.

Dropkick Murphys – Famous for Nothing Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about two different groups of people - one is religious and the other is not, and they both decide to go the other's direction.

Let me start off by saying I'm as non-religious as possible. I'm a very happy atheist, and this isn't meant to be preachy, but I'm fairly sure this song is about religion.

The first verse is about people partying, smoking/selling joints, and burning things in parking lots for a cheap laugh, all things which are condemned by those that are religious. The chorus "these lies won't save me, don't you know, don't you know, from the times that made me" refers, in my opinion, to those who are not following a religion, but decide that they need to be. They feel "the times that made them" won't save them from their problems.

The second verse shows that things didn't go so well. The kids that were out causing trouble are now going to court ("The courts are filling up, all the kids are coming down, for a head start on the troubles, of a long night on the town") to face their punishment.

It continues on to show that at least a few of them typically lead normal work lives ("nine to five on Weekdays, on the hour Sundays"), but even still they don't go to church ("The good lord was calling me, but I wasn't up"). He sees himself as, because of the things he does as a travesty ("I'm a goddamn travesty, and that's just my luck").

Then comes the problems in the song. The people who aren't religious decide to turn to the Church and play basketball instead of party, get drunk and burn things ("Their gang went my way for basketball"), while the religious people become "corrupted" and go out drinking ("My gang went their way for alcohol"). Now that the friends have all changed sides, when they meet again, they start trying to convert each other to the other's activities ("When we met it wasn't pretty at all"). But, no matter what happens, the church is always there for those that want it (of course, we know this isn't ACTUALLY true, but that's what the song says).

Summary: Religious people start leave the church and start doing "bad" things, while those that got punished for doing exactly that turn to the church. When the two converted groups meet, it "isn't pretty at all", but no matter what, the church is always open no matter who is there.
