I think the song does has lyrical references to the honky cat song which is about a "redneck" who went to the city where he has been trying to change himself. Everyone told him that he could not change and that he was trash and always a country boy! This song kind of is about someone coming out of the fog of drugs, fame and etc. Looking back on life and thinking that they should have not gone into this false life. Sounds like either a lover or producing label that this person is yelling at. The producer or lover is answering back saying hurtful things like you will never make it with out me! The person tries to leave but the person is trying to keep them by offering drugs, money and etc. The person is upset and is saying that hey I am not an object I am a person! You cannot offer me anything I do not want it I want a simple life. The lover/producer say that they will ruin the person and they will never be anyone. Then the person said you know I know you will replace me because there are people that hungry but I am not hungry anymore. I will not lower myself to be with you! I am so over you! Mongrels reference back to the hounds of society. Also the honky cat song lyrics where they have been sad for a while and they want the fame, forturen, etc but they miss home. They do not really belong there and all signs point to the fact that he needs to leave this life! That is the only way he can be happy! It can get air play because it seems to be about a loveable jazz musician who is homeless and the song has the popular "redneck" qualities that were popular with great music swelling. But I think it is about cocaine... because there is "though the looking glass" references ("Oh it must be hard for the likes of you to get by In a world that you just can't see through" ie mirror also "How does it feel that you cannot go home" which is also sort of a Dorothy reference) and when do cocaine you separate it with a razor! So when you look down in a mirror you have a razor face. Cocaine according to the song is the best thing apparently to an aging star because it gives you the ability to get up and get out. It makes you feel wonderful but when you get off you feel like Sh-t! Also the amazing grace thing is like he goes from being down in the dumps unable to walk to being like perhaps hit by 'god' like those :healers" changing a man who cannot walk to a man that can walk. Some drugs you need to light up to inject perhaps a candle or reference to the line "doesn't hold a candle to" ie everything is crap compared to this. So Lithium is amazing it brings me closer to god and nothing compares to it! But without the drug and when it leaves the system he wake up to find that he has done stupid druggie things. Lithium sort of deadens things and without it he is unbalanced. He might have the highs/mania but it causes him to shave his head which is unbalanced. He is not okay. I think that the poem is obviously sexual with drug undertones. Not a girl that misses much-- She is "disarming" you can take it as a sexual overtone. Well at first glance at the lyrics and when you are kind of just listening to it on the radio or ipod or whatever it seems like things are good at first then are bad. Violets flowers mean in flower language faithfullness but that is only the dream part so maybe they are not faithful to each other. But it makes sense for the feel of purple rain which is about abusing women. It is sort of the abusive "honey moon period" cycle where the male character is saying I can give you all of this hot passion and when we get together it is just going to be crazy hot and passionate. He talks about his partner and he as a sort of Adam and Eve where everyone including animals cans see their animalistic sensual attraction to each other. Then it turns kind of cold he you realize the first two stanzas are about a dream sort of world but what is actually there is just two bickering people. he is not really seeing the woman before him he much rather see this sort of dream woman who is constantly waiting for a dream world not the real woman. Perhaps suggesting that man and women not just his parents are always in the same situation men are always too bold and women want more. Also it the male character is very egotistical saying that you know I think you are pretty but I am a dove and I am not going to chase you around-- you need to come to me. The male character in the song seems rather hurt and has too much pride to invest in pursuing this woman he so clearly wants and he actually holds it against the woman. He thinks it sad that it cannot be that way but he does not ever invest in the relationship so how can this situation change. |

The first stanza it is the persona looking from the outside. It sounds like this person is listening to people in the next room or who are under the milkyway (ie everyone who is under the stars at the moment or another English/psych majors what does milk represent normally in dreams/writings?) making sounds of love (cleaning it up a bit for the web). Thinking about the loveless facination Definition of captivation: a feeling of great liking for something wonderful and unusual, the capacity to attract intense interest; ie they sound like they are really into it but they are not really in love but act like they are.Or that this must be some sort of motel situation where there have been lots of trysts but for right now it is quite until the other part of the tryst gets there. There is anticipation. Second stanza: The persona is waiting for someone or is having the idea of a tryst does not have time for a 'private consulation" (sounds very clinial and means this persona does not have time for someone/expert to tell them how to give advice/A conference at which advice is given or views are exchanged). This phrasing hintings at something sinister or like a "call girl" of some sort. Or that this persona does not care about the other partner of the tryst that they just have a need and don't want to listen, etc. Also the persona is in Memphis and then lowers the curtain which further makes it something sinister or the persona is trying to hide something. This is not a tryst with someone that the persona cares about or is proud of... also a suggestion of hiding true feelings as well that the persona truly feels. This persona is dishonest. Chorus: There are couple of ideas about this: Perhaps searching and exploring each other this person but it is beyond empty for one of them probably not the persona. This is a sort of loveless facination as well because the persona is under the same stars of the loveless people. After the chorus/ third stanza: Um well English/pysch majors what does milk usually represent? In the end there is one reason why men might start and end "love" making. Despite what this person was looking for all this loving behavior and rhapsody ends and after loving making. So there is a loveless facination with the persona as well. There is also an idea of fate that these two people are drawn to each other despite what either one gets out of the tryst. For a moment during it, it is fantastic like the roof flies off and they are under the milky way/the stars they have an out of body experience but then it is over and what they have is shallow/meaningless even though only a moment ago it was somethign unique,pure white and now it is just old and dirty. ------------------------------ It could also have to do with the Eastern Asia's view of the milky way http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way_(mythology) Peoples in Eastern Asia believed that the hazy band of stars was the "Silvery River" of Heaven (Chinese: 銀河, Korean: eunha and Japanese: ginga). In one story, the stars Altair and Vega were said to be two lovers who were allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month, when a flock of magpies and crows formed a bridge over the galactic river. That day is celebrated as Qi Xi, the Seventh Night (Chinese: 七夕, Korean: chilseok and Japanese: tanabata). But I think that this is just a contrast because there are too many clinical terms to describe love/the act of trysts. |
