To all those suggesting it's about Pompeii, as much as I would love for there to be a hit pop song that was literally about Pompeii, I feel it's almost certainly a metaphor. It seems like the song is very likely about a failed/failing relationship. The city (Pompeii) is a metaphor for the relationship and lifestyle they had. Things were going poorly and they decided to spend some time apart. During that time he hasn't really been up to much, yet on returning things are even worse than before, perhaps irreparably so. How is he going to be an optimist about this? Well he suggests that things maybe aren't as far gone as they seem and they could potentially rebuild. Still seems fairly melancholic about the potential to rebuild. "Oh where do we begin? The rubble or our sins?" Well that's my two cents. Really like this song. Good new band. |

Come on, this song is not about cutting. I know songs are open to interpretation, but there's simply no way it's about cutting, he mentions mirrors in the same line, he doesn't want it open to interpretation, he's talking about drugs. I don't think the song is about drugs, but that line most certainly is. He's being cynical about his profession and lifestyle. Drugs/temptation everywhere, money over art etc. However that's pretty old news, I feel like the entire meaning of the song comes down to the lines And sing love songs We sing love songs So sincere So sincere I think he's saying there's so much falseness in his work, but when he sings love songs, he's truely being sincere, even if it's still about the money. I hope that's what he means, just being cynical about the music industry is pretty old. I love the way he sings those lines, and I feel like he really emphases them, the meloncholy nature of it all. It's false, but it's real, he hates his fans, but his songs only matter because they care about them. Could be wrong on the second part, but the line is 100% about drugs, even if the lyrics were ambigious (they aren't), Robbie Williams does not come off as a cutter. |

Have listened to the video on the official youtube like 30 times to correct some of the lyrics (and cause I enjoy the song of course). There are a couple words that could go either way (life you wish to leave/lead), I listened to the acoustic version where he sings a bit slower and went with the closest. But could go either way. After all that i'm still not entirely sure what the song is about, but I don't think he has intended for the lyrics to make that clear anyhow. My guess is that while the "he'd have raised a hand by now" lyrics are fantastic, I don't think the songs particularly about religion. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say he's in love, and his partner wants more from life, and he's saying lets just appreciate what we have while we have it, the stuff you're chasing is over rated and can make you less happy rather than more. The sleep twitch thing might be to do with getting a surprise jolt?
