Neutral Milk Hotel – Two Headed Boy Pt. 2 (Live at Jittery Joe's) Lyrics 16 years ago
When I sing this (which is too often), I always use this version's "sister" instead of blister. It gets most the whole family in there- eveyone sans mom.

And maybe a lame note I can add is that everyone should learn the 5-6 chords on guitar and sing Mangum's songs to yourself. I read somewhere he wanted his music to be a 'force for healing' or something, and it's like therapy to sing these songs, like I'm singing them to my own family.

How beautiful, if sorrow had not made
Sorrow more beautiful than Beauty's self

Cloud Cult – When Water Comes to Life Lyrics 16 years ago
This is the only song that has ever made me cry. The first time I heard it, I just had this intense vision of this guy's dead kid on an autopsy table with the white coats standing over him, and him praising his child for returning his flesh to the circle of life to feed and form new babies. One of the first CC songs I heard stoned out of my gills in a friend's car, and then I look it up and he /did/ have a kid that died. It seems like 75% of the songs I've heard are him telling himself it's ok that he lost a child. what a muse...

Joanna Newsom – Swansea Lyrics 16 years ago
I get the story of these two young friends in their hometown with it's toad-ugly houses and traintrack out-of-town sharing a last night together before they go off into the rest of their lives. When life is really just the struggle for the next thing you're going to feed your face with (chew-chew, choo-choo!) out in the wild blue yonder of adulthood until you run your body down, they're kind of making a pact or something to drive on and...do something? And of course the town and area where you grow up always turns into a ghostown for you... or you become the walkinghost. either way, nostalgia

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Winter Lyrics 16 years ago
I doubt this is what he was going for, but this song seems to be about Scrooge! I mean, has anyone ever seen a Muppet Christmas Carol? (that's the only version I've seen) How he goes back and he's young and in love? I dunno, I just connect this song with Ebenezer sitting alone in a room, ruminating on his unhappy life. And then the angels come!

Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics 16 years ago
These lyrics make me wonder if Jeff Mangum was in MARCHING BAND in highschool or collegio perhaps?...

"Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums
The music and medicine you needed for comforting
So make all your fat, fleshy fingers to moving
And pluck all your silly strings
And bend all your notes for me
Soft, silly music is meaningful, magical
The movements were beautiful..."

I dunno, but the consequent lyrics in the same section seem to me to point at a good 'ol highschool band-geek romp in the hay

or not, what do you think?
