Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about relapsing into your old habits for a day. But he's telling himself that its not what he's really like.
In a way conveying that he misses that life but he's moved on and is completely over this junk he's doing or whatever sort of behavior he's talking about. Thus " This is no my life... It's just a fond farewell to a friend" . Its like an internal dialogue that you get when your falling back on old vices or habits. A very deep portrayal of doing heroin is what I imagine him writing about and falling back on that day. " The cold comfort of the in between" him talking about his sober life. Overall its about fighting off old habits you may relapse on I believe. Another great euphoric song written by Elliot R.I.P.

This song reminds me so much of the film Eastern Promises.

Morrissey – Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference Lyrics 16 years ago
Absolute favorite song of all time. The sincerity in his voice and genuine lyrics. He breaks down the kind of thought we should have when we are tripping over miniscule problems in our lives. Morrissey is a saint!

Guns N' Roses – One In A Million Lyrics 16 years ago
Ok after giving it some real thought I think most people are right by saying its Axles retaliation to his struggle in L.A.

However I don't think anyone is really getting the big picture of this one.
I feel its written more as a hand off to the next generation and people thinking of becoming rockstars (or having a rockstar mentality) but not knowing the ropes. This was a memoir of his personal anger that he turned into a political and social analogy. He's saying look I know your angry with all these different groups of people because they don't allow you to be yourself or pick at your soul and stand in your way BUT DONT LET THAT GAS YOUR HEAD UP. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR ONE IN A MILLION.

Then he goes on to say--
Maybe someday we'll see you, Oo
oh, Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high, Oo, much too high
Yeah,

Meaning we tried to tell you that its all nonsense and it barely affects your life at all but you were much too caught up in your anger and just faded away.
If its meant to be ironic like the self analogical type of song I think Axle wrote it to be, then it makes an incredible breakthrough by boldly telling off politics, racism, religion, immigrated dissidents by making cliches out of them with the generalizations. The song is not only meant to uplift white people spirits but everyones as thats what rock n' roll was brought up to do. So he's also telling all these different groups of people live their life and remember their one in a million of their kind so do what you want before its too late and you become cliches.

Of course it might not be about this but I choose to use this explanation to define the song because it could be written from anyones perspective and STILL HOLD THE SAME MEANING.

Your still one in a million no matter what everyone else from your race, ethnic group or sexual preference is labeled as, everything else is just obstacles you have to overcome.

Elliott Smith – Can't Make a Sound Lyrics 16 years ago
"Why should you want any other
When you're a world within a world?"

I think this is him calling out extroverted people for excluding shy people from their world. He's saying your world has a myriad of things going on why cant you just change your polarity for a minute to hang with me?

"Eyes locked and shining
Can't you tell me what's happening?"

This reminds me of someone apathetic not having the will power to help their friend.
Overall this song has to be about the trials and tribulations of a shy person, as Elliot was himself extremely shy R.I.P.

Ambulance LTD – Anecdote Lyrics 16 years ago
Its definitely about someone who doesn't know what they are in for and drowns his problems with drugs ( probably heroin ). And its from a third person point of view of a friend who is trying to laugh it off as if it was a funny anecdote when its really not ( thus the very dismal but upbeat soulful track). Its being sung through a long time friend or someone who might have been through the same addiction and now feels for his friend but doesn't want to come off as a patronizing prick. Because you cant tell your friend that he has gone too far and has delved into an extremely decadent lifestyle without sounding like a pussy or getting into a backhanded argument about morality. You have to deal with it and watch your friend dig his own grave.

"i don't refuse
baby, if you only knew
but i don't think you do"

"don't say you feel the same way too
honey, i don't think you do"

"'cause you, like to believe, that all that love is free
oh, someone like you, will never be lonely, or not get the blues
but darlin', it's not true"

As you can tell all these lines are heavily glazed with self-righteousness. As if the narrator wants to tell the subject to not make the same mistakes as him but doesn't want to loose friendship and instead just writes a cathartic song to make his friend see it in a different light.
