yes yes yes. when i first heard this song, i thought "i hate those hipsters!" i was about 16. and then, listening to it now, i think, "its all about judging people. even if you feel justified in who your judging, it doesn't matter, b/c your still wasting your energy and your doing what you hate others for doing." it IS neverending. and i think the only way to stop the process, or try to stop it anyway, it to really adopt the idea of "focusing on yourself". i live one life, and its mine. i can't let anything interfere with that. what matters is that i like myself and do what is best for me. listening to Say Anything's new album, you can really see the growth. I think with songs like "do better" its apparent that max is trying to focus on himself. because in the end, its all just wasted energy on people we don't care for, who will never change. and even if they do, it has nothing to do with us. not really. |

its about a lover who wants to save their partner from the depression they are in. i think its applicable with addiction aswell. but it can relate to any relationship, not just romantic. I think it was writen from a lovers point of view because of the line: "We should never awake without the other Lying by our side". none the less its beautiful. and i'm sure many can relate to the person trying to help the other. or the depressed person, who is becomming a burden, though neither person wants to admit it. but its clear to both of them. eventually it gets too much. and its no one persons job to save someone else. shes done all she can w/o completely sacrificing herself. |

he is so clearly describing a panic attack, and then telling himself to calm down. i like to describe Fun as "the format on anti-depressents". or perhaps, with therapy. he using coping skills to help him and he's found a new sense of happiness. |

my mother heard this song for the first time the other day when i had this playing. she, who is normally very blunt about sexual things, said she thought it was about his penis. and i, annoyed that my mother thought she was so smart, told her she was wrong. but i listened to this a thousand times, and i think that you two are right. i like how he talks about something so sexual in such an eloquent way. i'm just upset now, because my mother was right. and i hate it when she is right. its few and far between that she is, but it still sucks. |

i think... she wants him so much. she idolizes him. worships him. i think the knees have a double meaning. both the literal sense, as in she's willing to do anything sexually, and he doesn't need this to be with her. and the sense that she worships him. i love the subtle differences. He says "i kissed your mouth AND back". as in, he kissed her b/c he wanted to, he initiated, and then the times she kissed him, he kissed her back. but she says "i kissed your mouth YOUR back". i think she has this grand idea of him, that it she becomes scared to lose him. so she thinks sexual favors will keep her spot in his life. but he doesn't need that. all these sexual things she is willing to do, are not b/c she wants to share beautiful experiences, but b/c she doesn't want to lose him, and she thinks this the only way he'll keep her. i think when he sings "she's still too young", i think its b/c he's told her all of this before. he said he didn't need so much from her, but she doesn't believe it, she keeps trying for this sexual relationship, and he is frustrated. he tells her, but "she's still to young". she hasn't learned, isn't listening, and won't grow. |

i think the thing about damien rice is often type-casted as only being sad and introspective. and being mature about his feelings, in the sense that he can't be angry, b/c he's too "evolved" but he, just as all of us, get angry too. and mean and hurtful. and this song is a piece of that. and because its what he feels, its damien rice. "rootless tree" is another song with strong language. he doesn't just feel pain in the sad way, he feels pain in an angry way aswell. |
