This song is about depression as some have said. The 1st part of the song isn't about a person. Its about him talking about himself (hence the title and the lines "Should I be afraid of the face, that I see, In the mirror staring back at me) and despite him being totally depressed and feeling weak/pathetic (And you say that Im weak, So show me the proof) at the one point he wrote this, still exists (eg he hasnt killed himself) despite all his thoughts (Because I still exist inspite of you). The voices are your doubts in your head and the convos you have trying to work things out in your head (hence the song title), pulling you down, making you feel worthless and ashamed (Ashamed like me) to be yourself and the fact you see this makes you feel fucked up ("i'll show you how it feels to be fucked up like me") and you just want a day where everything just goes away and you feel normal and your pain stops (hence he "I long for solitude and peace within me, void of all the anger and the fear") |

This song is about him asking his then (or maybe even now!) partner to stop trying to control him and telling him what is what, despite him giving away everything including his pride (hence swallowed your words, and swallowed my pride) for her and that she's making him feel utterly worthless (hence he's still wearing his miserable skin - he's a waste of skin/life) . Essentially he's asking what does he want him to be because she's asking so much of him and the fact its political is probably from him wanting something from the relationship and she's using sex/love/words to get what she wants and finally he's fighting back and wants his pride back and he realises even if gives her the world it won't be good enough (hence if he cuts off his nose to spite himself, it wouldn't be good enough for her demands). |

Thats my take on it. He's been hurt over and over by this girl and he's not really in control or with her, he's an outsider on the relationship despite doing everything he possibly can, over and over and pushing his own pride and pain to the back to be with her. But she's as damaged as he is and despite all this, come the end of the song he's with her but he knows the real her (and you'd suspect someone singing this is on the verge of ending things between them...). |
