| Built to Spill – Carry the Zero Lyrics

To me this is a pretty straight tale about the girl who just can't maintain a relationship and is always on the rebound. The "zero" is the rebound hookup who is just a piece of meat who is perhaps desperate and will shack up with anything - hence a "zero". Tragedy occurs because even with the Zero she's unable to maintain the relationship ("Took it with you when you moved and got it broke...". The narrator is apologetic but is getting fed up ("I can't be your apologist very long... I'm surprised that you'd want to carry that on..." Eventually he opens up with a criticism "I can't see your response putting them back on..." "Like they're waiting [they = the zeros?] for your guard to fall" and finally admits that the girl has become her own worst enemy "and you've become what you thought was dumb... a fraction of the sum [i.e. a zero].
Of Course the meaning doesn't necessarily have to be about a girl, that's just the way I interpret it. Many different relationships follow a similar pattern as romantic ones when personal feelings are involved so this could also be about a close friend, etc. Ultimately I suppose when I think of this song I think about jealously angst and spite - just like many Built to Spill songs. |

| Superchunk – Driveway to Driveway Lyrics

"Driveway to driveway drunkkk" - what a great drinking anthem and some of Superchunk's more poetic lyrics. I can't help but think about my confused adolescent years whenever I hear this song. |
