The Fray – You Found Me Lyrics 16 years ago
The Fray does an amazing job by leaving their songs open for different interpretations. I've read some of the interpretations and they usually go along with how I've personally interpreted it. But you did a fantastic job breaking it down to your interpretation. I too think the lyrics is suppose to be a conversation between the singer and someone else. I'm not a 'believer', but in this context I think it makes a lot of sense that he's having a conversation with God. However, I think you would be able to use anybody as a substitute.

Again, I like how you break it down, kudos to you.

I think Isaac is emphasizing on his grandfather blaming Isaac's grandmother for not giving him a son.

I also think the following part, "The century before you never could turn 21", simply emphasizes on how there was a universal culture/custom of favoring having a son (at least as a first born). But in the turn of 21st century a lot of things changed in terms of "gender discrimination".

So my interpretation is that his mother was unfortunate to be born during that period to a man like his grandfather.

Why doesn't, "The century before you never could turn 21", make sense?

Your general interpretation is basically how I see it too. I had initially thought he was talking about his great-grandfather (father) and his grandmother daughter). But it makes perfect sense that it's his grandfather and mother.
