Interesting. I had read somewhere it was about someone in Layne's life using drugs with him - I thought it to be his girlfriend, who died. Thinking about the lyrics in relation to his father, makes just as much sense. Once again, the beauty of AIC lyrics, they are vague enough to be interpreted on many different levels. |

many soldiers who returned from vietnam were met not with a hero's welcome, but rather disdain. The Vietnam war was extremely unpopular and those soldiers returning from the war (many of which were drafted and sent there not by their own choice) were considered part of the 'war machine'. So, imagine a vietnam vet returning from hell (as described in the lyrics of this song) only to be spit upon when they returned back home. Pretty shitty. |

This is the beauty of this song. The lyrics are vague enough to be interpreted however the listener sees fit. Yes, it can be broken down to explain relationships, drug addiction, or the loss of a loved one. But we all can take what we want from this song's lyrics, and more importantly, emotion and walk away with something completely different from the next person and it will still have meaning. For me, I always thought this song was about sinking into depression and trying to find ways to either see beauty in it or escape from it. But, sadly, there is neither choice but to accept it (depression) for what it is. |
