Porcupine Tree – Time Flies Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is important in a lot of ways and the only song that made me cry ever. When I saw it live I literally had to bit my lip and wipe my eyes throughout the piece. I've haven't cried since way before I was in middle school. I'm in my 20's now and I really thought I lost the ability to cry. Life is too short and all the beautiful times in our life go by too fast. Memories fade and things we value, things we wanted to do, people we wanted to become, all just become fragmented and lost in the rush. We need to slow down as a people as a culture Time really does fly after all.

Porcupine Tree – Trains Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about the loss of innocence. It describes three instances of how events took away the narrators innocence and darkened his view of the world. The summer is slipping away is obvious meaning he desperatly wants to go back to simpler happier times in his life like his childhood.

The train set is a metaphor for his childhood the match means that it is about to be set on fire and his childhood ends. The railway represents the path of a person’s life it’s inevitable he would lose his innocence at some point just like how a train inevitable follows a set course. Now how he loses his innocence is debatable it’s vague but most likely his cousin is having sex with someone. This is not absurd the next song on the album is almost explicitly about sex.

The next stanza is about losing a different type of innocence he talks of his first relationship and how it happened suddenly like a radiant blur the 60 tons although oddly specific denotes the importance and heavy impact it had on his life. It could also be an airplane I didn’t think of that before but a lot of the previous posters mentioned it. Someone he knew could have died in a plane crash which would also cause him to lose some innocence and further darken his view on the world. Scars in the country are significant events along a person’s life that stick in your mind and change how you see things like losing someone important or your first relationship. I see it as the start of a relationship.

The last two stanzas are definitely about a relationship and most likely are about having sex but he also feels bounded by the love for this person like he is being tied up but he loves her and the feelings are just too good. He feels its ok even if he is losing himself and who he is.

Remember this CD is called “In Absentia“ meaning “in absence” and is clearly about losing someone you love and the resulting pain/murder and serial killings. So this song isn’t about trying to get back to the girl he loved it’s about trying to get back to his childhood this song represents the high point of his relationship but also the beginnings of how it falls apart the later songs in the CD are when they break up and then the narrator goes into the pain he feels in her absence.
