| Imogen Heap – The Walk Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I see this song as defining a break up, and a weakness in one's self to want to take the person back. The title itself, "The Walk", I translate as that heart breaking post break up travel time when all of your regrets and should/would/could haves come flooding over you, and you hype yourself into believing that you just made the biggest mistake of your life. Perspective wise, however, I would think that the singer is not the one doing the "walking", but has sent the ex on his or her way. "I think you'd better leave, it's not safe in here. I feel a weakness coming on." This line would suggest as much, as well as hinting at the feeling that mistakes have been made. "No it's not meant to be like this, not what I planned at all, I don't want to feel like this, so that makes it all your fault." Again hinting that the singer has done the breaking up. I see these lines as the aftermath, the thoughts that run through your head after the other is gone. Blame, hurt, weakness, regret. "Big trouble losing control primary resistance at a critical low on the, on the double gotta get a hold point of no return one second to go no response on any level red alert this vessels under siege total overload, all systems down they have got control theres no way out we are surrounded give in give in and relish every minute of it. " Not only my favourite part of the song, but the emotional centrepiece of the lyrical ensemble. Sung at a fast pace that suggests urgency, these lines are reminiscent of that critical time where you instantly miss the other person, and are begging yourself to surrender and let them back in at any cost. This song is a strong, emotional roller coaster, and gives me chills every time I listen to it. Bravissimo Imogen, you've done it again. |

I definitely agree with Lou*, for he longest time I've construed this song as being about violent alcoholism. "We'll work it all out together, but we're getting nowhere tonight." This line suggests that there are temporary mental blocks in place that are preventing her from getting to him, which to me implies alcohol or drug abuse, anything that affects one's state of mind, really. It's never easy to confront an addict when they're under the influence. "Just put down the car keys, or somebody's gonna get hurt." This line pretty much solidified my theory when I heard it. It's fairly straightforward interpretation, no one should drive drunk or after doing drugs. What's more, the word "smash" strewn throughout the background of the song is, to me, a poetic way to simulate a fight or material destruction of some sort. Pity, it's always the sad songs that are the most beautiful. |

It's a love gone stale. "If the fire's out baby, how you gonna keep me warm?" "I know it's a lie, I want it to be true." This makes me think of a relationship that has gone on so long it's become more of a routine than anything. These two people are in a relationship solely because they've been in it for so long, being out of it just wouldn't make sense, but they've lost the passion. This song, to me, is one of them finally admitting it. |

To me, this song is a plea to have things be the way they used to be again. "Now you're all gone, got your make up on, and you're not coming back" Someone special in the speaker's life has undergone changes, be they in looks or personality, and the speaker wants their old someone back. A good friend of mine has changed drastically since we graduated high school two years ago, and I miss her old self every day. I miss her vivaciousness and the shenanigans we used to get into. I would give anything to have her back the way she was instead of the toxic situation she's in now. |

| To me, this song speaks of new love, one that hasn't been professed, and the fear that hesitation and failure to say anything, be it because of a roadblock or simply nerves, would leave the love lost. It really is beautiful, a very poetic reminder that we need to take advantage of the time we have. | |
