Yes! Judging by most of the comments on most of these songs, no one seems to get that it's a concept album and it should be taken as a whole as well as piece by piece |

The National – The Perfect Song Lyrics
|
It's about an awkward brief relationship Matt had early in life, probably one of his first attempts at a relationship or connection, and reflecting on it makes him feel embarrassed about it.
"The car was warm and we had wine, but I couldn't find the perfect song"
This line shows how he was nervous about trying to set the mood to please her, but wasn't able to
"I hope you don't remember me, and I hope you're not alone."
He has no ill-intentions for this woman, yet he's so embarrassed about what they did have together "seven times I was under you" and hopes that she's forgotten about it, even though he's sometimes reminded of it "sometimes I still feel your weight when I close my eyes."
It's the most apathetic non-love song. I love how the National addresses such uncomfortable feelings in their music that we've all felt at one point or another. It wasn't a one night stand, but rather an awkward, unsuccessful attempt to woo someone that didn't work out. And he's ashamed of his failure. But he remembers it every now and then, and just hopes that she doesn't remember it too. But he wishes well, for her, hopes she's not alone. |

The National – The Thrilling of Claire Lyrics
| 10 years ago
|
you're exactly right, it's about what men are willing to endure in order to please a woman they care for. The bondage may be a bit too extreme, more likely it's just a metaphor for his attitude toward relationships; pessimistic with a slight touch of masochism; it's Matt's signature. |

The National – Murder Me Rachael Lyrics

I never took Rachel as an ex as much as a current girlfriend he caught out with "pretty boy," who may or may not be a romantic interest, and he knows it's his fault because he loved her "to ribbons," too much. So he's exacting his revenge on "pretty boy." |

The National – Forever After Days Lyrics
|
This definitely doesn't have any religious ties, the National strictly does not write about issues involving religion.
But I do agree with mrcricket as far as the rest of his interpretation. The National frequently write about feeling entitled for enduring the mundane.
"a lot of the national's songs have a sense of disparate fortitude... "Mr. November", "All the Wine", "Fake Empire", "Forever After Days"... no matter how humble we pretend to be, we crave attention and feel entitled to the spotlight. "i used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders", "a birthday candle in a circle of black girls", "tiptoe through our shiny city with our diamond slippers on", "on my feet i stand tonight"...
after all, we hold our own against monuments of shit on a daily basis, yet rarely do we receive any form of reward or recognition." |

The National – Exile Vilify Lyrics

Just knowing The National, I don't think the meaning of the song has anything to do with the game, I think they just chose a song that's lyrics coincide with the game well enough to fit. |

Sad this comment doesn't have more ups, it's more accurate than any of the other interpretations here. This is exactly what the song is about. |

The National – Cherry Tree Lyrics
|
with the title, the Cherry Tree is representative of honesty while he's also repeating to himself "loose lips sink ships" conveying an internal dispute, which fits the mood of the song flawlessly. He doesn't want to talk about it because he doesn't want to lie yet he doesn't want to say too much. |

The National – Pink Rabbits Lyrics

Or that they broke up for a while and now she wants him back. Cause I think the whole
"I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
I was just getting used to living life without you around
I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
You always said I held you way too high off the ground"
is about her wanting him back and he's confused why and also surprised
and this
"You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park
You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart"
is him having mixed emotions about it. Like obviously he wants to take her back but he's reflecting on how much he was hurt by the breakup the last time, and he's too much in shock to make a decision. |

I think the
"it wasn't like a rain, it was more like a sea
I didn't ask for this pain, it just came over me"
line is a reference to the "sea of love"
He just fell in love without asking for it.
Also I don't see how everyone's reading this as being about a breakup. I saw it as more of a fight/temporary dispute. He's wondering if he's the first one on her mind when she's relaxing. |

Sparklehorse – Box of Stars, Pt. 1 Lyrics

This is one of my favorite Sparklehorse songs.
Again, Linkous says it the way that only he can, and those who know the feeling can't describe it any more accurately. Mark really nailed it on this one. |

Sparklehorse – Babies On The Sun Lyrics

Wow, no comments?
I love this song. Laughed WAY too hard the first time I heard it.
Well, I take it the song's just about babies being babies. Their innocence, etc. I don't know why they're on the sun, though... |

Sparklehorse – Mountains Lyrics

The entire album is about trying to cope with his soulmate's death. Every song is about her or how he feels now that she's gone.
It's completely depressing, but he lost a BIG part of his life, and he felt as though he had nothing left. It's a tragedy. |

The Weakerthans – Relative Surplus Value Lyrics

Does anyone else think it should say "Touch my name tag. Should say 'Hello, I'm too tired to smile today' " Like how they make the Name tags that say "Hello, I'm..." and you fill in the rest. I think that's what he's trying to get at here, maybe I'm wrong. |

Modest Mouse – Polar Opposites Lyrics

I always thought of the primer gray part as how everything returns to its original form after death. Like how a car begins in that color before it's painted. How when we die, we revert. Thought it was relevant. |

Why does someone ALWAYS have to post that every single song by MM is about drug use. Isn't MM anti-drug now? Just because they weren't before doesn't mean that every single song is about drugs. |

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
Flo's talking about herself falling very deeply in love very quickly. That's what the whole album's about.
She's jaded from past relationships, that's why she's running and hiding, but the truth is, the happiness hit her so fast, she can't escape it. "run fast" to escape from it because the "horses" are coming. It's just the beginning of her falling in love.
theme continues through the album. it's obvious when you listen to all the songs in order. |

Interpol – Take You on a Cruise Lyrics
|
I always think of this song as like an old-fashioned romantic, trying to win over a woman who just doesn't care for him. Not necessarily a cocktail waitress, but just some girl he likes. He wants to take her on a cruise, as the title suggests. He's just trying to win her over, the classical way. Timeless song. :) |
