| Regina Spektor – Sailor Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The ship could have been officially named the USS Kentucky but nicknamed affectionately "Mary Anne" by the sailors. They think the ship life is rough like being with a girl that is a tease. The ship is a joke, it's a little neglected. The "Americano, Tropicano" part could mean that they are always on the move, from America to some tropic country. The way Regina sings it makes it seem like they are always going back and forth. | |

| I think when she sings about the children, it's done in birth order and Barbara is the youngest and probably an infant or baby. At least that's what I picture. The character won't see Barbara grow up and probably guessing that she will look just like her mom. | |

This song is loosely based off an old anonymous Egytian poem disputing suicide. To Whom Shall I Speak Today?' To whom shall I speak today? I am laden with misery Through lack of an intimate ... Death is in my sight today Like the clearing of the sky, Like a man attracted thereby to What he knows not. Death is in my sight today, Like the longing of a man to see home When he has spent many years held in captivity. Anon |

Maybe this song is tied into "Apres Moi". This songs talks about rising from the mud and starting over and "Apres Moi" talks about "I'm not my own, it's not my choice." When you are a prisoner, you are not your own free woman/man. Plus, since this song is right after "Mary Ann" on the CD "Meets the Gravediggers and Other Short Stories", this prisoner should most likely be Mary Ann. (she killed Stan Butler and now she's in jail for it) |
