Peter Gabriel – Indigo Lyrics 8 years ago
It definitely sounds like a song about some sort of death to me, but I don't think it's from old age as someone earlier suggested. Specifically, the line "the kids downstairs making a hell of a din" doesn't support that. Someone dying of old age wouldn't have "kids" anymore.

To me it sounds more like someone dying from a disease (the line about "yellow liver" sounds a lot like cirrhosis).

Alternatively, it could be a metaphor for the death of a dream (of a fulfilled life perhaps), as it seems to suggest kind of a mid-life crisis in ways: "Not like the start, I was good at the art of survival."

I don't know, but those are my thoughts. Beautiful, haunting tune for sure.

And it's not "hoping she leaves that punk" --- It's "hoping she leaves that book."

This song (to me) has a lot of references that could refer to a post-rapture world.

The main one of course is "prayers will never be answered again."

But the whole first verse makes a lot of sense.

"Phones still ring and singers sing; speakers are speaking in code."

That to me sounds like it seems as though life is still going on normally, but something is amiss (speaking in code).

And the chorus sounds exactly like post-rapture.

I dunno ... just an idea.

Amazing song. There a few wrong lines here though.

"All of these traffic signs and lonesome bars blindsiding me and you"

"But there are things that lie in my path
That I just have to do"

"For no matter how much I really do want to stay
You know I can't, no it's too late."

It is most certainly "Fanny" (or Fannie if you choose) and not "Annie." Granted, it's not clear in the chorus because the end of "off" blurs the beginning of the name. However, in the last verse, they're CLEARLY saying "to get back to miss Fanny." It's unmistakable there, unless you're maybe listening to a cover version or something.

You can also see a few live videos of Levon singing this where you can clearly see him making the "F" sound of "Fanny" in that last verse (no to mention that you can hear it clear as a bell).
