HanRanzifer- i loved you point of view, very artistic! i know that he wrote this song while staying in Israel in the Yom Kipur war. in this war both sides had many casualties, so he must've expirienced some death there, that could be the reason to his tone against god. also, i did not make the connection between samuel's incident and the song, thumbs up for it. thinkwonder - you are partly right, you cant get a new start in every matter. the jews calls the time gap between Rosh Hashana (the jewish new year) and Yom Kippur "the horrible times". from what i know (and i may be wrong, though im colse to these holydays) in those ten days you should self examine yourself, and all that you've done. its true that not everyman who did horrible stuff is judged to death , because god may still have a roll for him, or i can just use the famous sentence "god works in a mysterious ways", but in these days you are in some kind of trial between yourself and your maker. and you may try to change his mind by showing to him (and by him i mean yourself) that you know what you've done, you fully understand it, and wants to make amends. in bible time, the jews used to do sacrafice because it was acceptable in these times (though i think some religious still does it). at the end of yom kippur you start the new year in hope that you've been wrriten in the "book of life". from what i've expirienced all kind of people (bad people - such as murderers , thives, etc..) are suddenly appearing in the synagouge hoping to make amends. by the religious jewish point of view this day in not only for the jews, but to all people wherever they are. i would be more than happy to continue this disucussion, forgive me for any kind of spelling mistake. |

i had another thought, a complex one, but ill do my best trying to explain that. Nancy represents honesty which is also a mystery, kind of a god. when he says there was no one at all - he means no one was honesty. she slept with everyone - she belongs to everyoone - not only 1 religion. she fell in love for us - she(god) loves us for for our's sake. nancy is alone, she never said she's wait for us- god wont wait for us people to be honest. we told her she was beautiful, free but none of us would meet her - religous people are hypocrite. and now you look around you, see her everywhere - now after you've heard all this you see her, "nancy", god. many used her body - many used god's name in the hollow of the night when you are all alone... - when you are alone, at your most "with yourself", thinking , time you can see her, you know the truth. i hope you liked my point of view :) |

LadyMidnight is right, Cohen comfirmed it. its about yom kippur , day of judgment. there is a pray , which in it you say how people are going to die. so when he says who by fire, aho by water and etc. who shall die by those things, because you cannot escape that. once you've been doomed you will die. one more thing, when he says "who in this mirror?" he is talking about himself. |
