| And anyway, if you read my comment and really think about it, it very well could be about LSD. I personally believe that's what it is about and it's not going to change, no matter how "stupid" you think my opinion is. | |

| Colosimo, correct me if I'm wrong (since that appears to be how you get pleasure in life, and since you are clearly blessed with the power of omniscience, allowing you to know absolutely everything about Animal Collective as well as someone you have never met and, undoubtedly, the answer to my question) but the purpose of this website is to post your opinion/interpretation of a song's meaning, is it not? Or was I mistaken and it's really to reassure yourself of your superiority over other people through web-insulting? Clearly your maturity level suggests that you, in fact, are the one that needs to "grow up". | |

It's pretty simple: about heroin. I love how trippy it gets toward the end, with the echos. It sounds like a demented carnival ride. |

this song is so eerie and haunting. it's more like poetry. i think it's about loss, and someone who can't let go, who half wants to mend everything and start over, "you'll ask me to pray for rain" but a deeper part of her would go through all the pain again, over and over, because she still loves him, "you'll ask it to burn again". |

| Department of Eagles – Phantom Other Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is beautiful...I love the weird background noises and vocals. It seems so apocalyptic or something, like all of mankind is involved in this ruined relationship with the way it says to "send us ALL away" and "my god in heaven, what were we thinking?" and "we gotta get out now", sort of like his relationship is crumbling and so his world as he knows it. The "phantom other" could be the ghost of his lover, his life, what he used to have. By saying "you're not the only one", the speaker could be letting him know that it's not the end of the world, heartbreak happens all the time. The end seems like he just wants out, to get away from the situation. Honestly, I'm pretty confused by it all, but looking at it that way sort of makes sense to me. | |

I think it's "out in the morning calm" and definitely " cursed these legs". I love this song/music video. I think it's about a man wandering aimlessly in the morning, without an alibi, and maybe his love told him something he didn't want to hear, "you don't need to be so honest". I picture him sort of breaking down and laughing sort of tragically at what his life has come to, falling down and cursing his legs in the anger derived from the end of his relationship. I think he then "tried so hard" to get over his past lover, but can't because she's the one, no one does it like her. |

| The Shins – Sleeping Lessons Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I don't think it's about Alice in Wonderland, but it obviously references it a bunch, mostly in the lines "You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise" (referencing Alice's hesitancy to continue growing and shrinking based on what she ate and drank, "See, those unrepenting buzzards want your life", and the "off with their heads" part. I think The Shins' lyrics are so complex and hard to understand, which always confuses me. But I love this song, especially the "spill it out on the ragged floor, a thousand different version of yourself" part. I've always thought it's about drug addiction, which makes sense to add in Alice and Wonderland references, because it's obviously a drugged-out book/movie. It sounds like a message to an addict: "go without, til the need seeps in, you low animal" and "you're not obliged to swallow anything you despise". |

| Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This is my favorite song of all-time. The live, Stop Making Sense version specifically. But I sort of feel like yes, it is a love song, but about a love that ended tragically. I mean, the song is called This Must Be The Place (NAIVE MELODY), as if he was naively in love and happy once, but looking back, he was only being naive about how things would turn out. The unsureness of some of the lyrics, "guess I must be having fun" and "I guess that this must be the place" add to the idea that he was too caught up in love to see the reality. I think he is looking back on this love as a representation of his blissfully ignorant naivete. I'm not sure, but that's how I interpret it, anyway. |

I was tripping on the 4th of July and watching fireworks and listening to this song...amazing. But anyway, I came to the conclusion that this song is about acid. That's just my opinion and it could be the trip, but it makes sense if you think about it...these parts in particular: "now it's day, I've been trying to get that taste off my tongue" (acid is usually taken orally, dissolved on the tongue. this could mean he is trying to come down and stop tripping, because it's day) "attractive day in the rubble of the night from before" (he could have had a bad trip the night before, but in the morning after you take acid, everything is beautiful and shiny and new feeling) "now I can't walk in a vaccuum, I feel ugly, I feel my pores" (this part in particular I think lends itself to the idea of describing a trip...not being able to walk in a vaccuum, and most importantly the feeling ugly and feeling your pores part. this is a very common feeling on acid: you feel ugly, and your pores look and feel huge.) "...man it passes right by me, it's behind me, now it's gone" (this could mean all the questions mean nothing to him, he's feeling tragic, perhaps having a bad trip) "and I can't lift you up cause my mind is tired" (recovering from a trip leaves you extremely tired, with a headache, etc.) "It's family beaches that I desire A sacred night, where we'll watch the fireworks The frightened babies poo They've got two flashing eyes and they're colored why They make me feel that I'm only all I see sometimes" (This has a lot of trip imagery...frightened babies with two flashing eyes and they're colored why. also the last line is a common thought I have while tripping) "I've been eating with a good friend who said "A Genii made me out of the earth's skin" But in spite of her she is my birth kin, she spits me out in her surly blood rivers All the people life lurking in dominions of a hot Turk dish If the elephants be reaching for our purses, then meet me after the world with the shivers" (eating acid with a good friend? and the rest could be hallucinations had on the trip. meet me after the world with the shivers = meet me after the trip, in reality) I'm curious to see if this makes sense to anyone else... |
