To me, this song is obviously about doing drugs (e, molly, K, coke, speed, whatever) and hoping to have sex with strung-out girls. I find it odd that so many people don't seem to realize this. Just yesterday, a coworker who doesn't even drink was raving about this song, no pun intended. Alcohol doesn't make you stay up till sunrise, and I don't know anyone who can do it au naturale. Daft Punk has always been popular on that scene and now they are really putting it out there. Funny to me that drug use is now a chart-topping topic, and I don't mean that from a place of judgement as I've obviously done this sort of thing myself in order to know what they are talking about. |

I was listening/singing to this song in the car today and my voice just started to shake and I started to cry. I know it's stupid but I felt like I knew her. She was even more fucked up than me but in a lot of the same ways. Interesting that it's about her pet canary. I was wondering because it occurred to me that it sounded like it was about her now, even though that's obviously not what she intended when she wrote it.
Spoken 'til one day she couldn't be heard
she just stopped singing
Ava was the morning, now she's gone...

@NowCowLevel: Yes! Re: Famine! I hadn't thought of that. Anyway, you can tell KB does a lot of drugs and is a very sexual, experimental person. Meth definitely turns people into sex fiends and sort of stokes stream of consciousness creativity. Not that I'm advocating it! But he talks about wanting to make her (him?) ejaculate till it's no longer fun (plastis wafer) and cum 200 times a day (gallery piece) in other songs, which seemed like a dead give-away, and he talks about putting trash in his body. If it were heroin, he'd be able to sleep just fine. |

Also, as brilliant a musician and songwriter as he is, he seems like a colossal asshole. (Someone I know who met him can vouch for this fact, that he's funny but a dick.) When I first heard him singing these lyrics, it made me chuckle as I sort of imagine HE'S the horrible thing, being horrible to this girl, and that it's quite nervy of him to suggest, as many men tend to do, that it's her fault and he's been totally good and blameless. |

A lot of their lyrics seem to make oblique references to meth use. If you listen to Skeletal Lamping, so many of the lyrics are bizarre and overtly sexual, which goes hand in hand with meth use. "I'm calling your ass up at 3 in the morning saying wake up young dragon (meth smoke), let's go get compromised." The hour of the night seems to suggest that too.
Anyway, it would seem like this album, he's off the meth and this is someone he did it with and he wants to push her away. The part of not being able to sleep (hello!) and nightmares about teeth falling out (uppers make you grind your teeth in your sleep and that can often make you dream of your teeth falling out due to the pressure of grinding--it can actually happen in real life too; many meth users lose their teeth) seems to indicate this.
Someone suggested to me that the thing he's actually singing about as "you're a horrible thing" is the meth itself, which led me down this train of thought. Like he is trying to shun his habit because of all the horrible things it does to him. Later lyrics such as "wish we weren't so complicated/wish you weren't so medicated" seem to detract from this theory but it's still an interesting theory nonetheless, much like Rick James' Mary Jane; is he singing about a woman or a drug? As we all know, people can be drugs we become addicted to. But yes, I think he's singing about a woman he did drugs with and how things got all fucked up because of them. |

I just listened to it again and it was "careless rage" not jealous rage, which accounts for why people had thought canned. I was wondering how you could get a C out of a J. They were at my work yesterday and performed and they were ADORABLE! I just wanted to pinch their cheeks off. Unfortunately, they did not play this song and my name is Anna so I was quite disappointed. |

Surprising no one has commented on this. Maybe because the meaning is fairly transparent? I love his detailed observations of the mundane and his voice is mesmerizing. I'd probably enjoy it if he read me the dictionary. |

After lurking around here but not joining, I finally decided to join because I finally had something to say that no one had said yet, so here goes...
I'm not entirely sure about the penny dropping bit (if it were "when the panty you drop with an incredible thud" it would sort of make sense, but I'm thinking he wouldn't say panty that way with his accent. Dunno about kick the tin either, but the rest of it to me means:
he knows where she's going (out the door as soon as he's done with her) but don't know where she's been (has no idea whether she is promiscuous or diseased or not), and as opposed to the other thing (the possibility of an STD from sleeping with so many strangers) he'll worry about it when it's trouble he's in (he'll worry about it only when he sees symptoms, but for now he doesn't care. |
