i grew up in west texas, particularly the odessa/midland area. this song is an apt description of the isolated landscape -- it's completely flat and empty and hot and the sky is enormous, making the sunsets last all night. the character is inviting this person out there because it's literally getting away from everything and he's learned to appreciate the beauty in the little things. |

i'd say it's probably more of an allusion to WWII as is the setting of "for esme with love and squalor." the girl he's writing to in the song is "making shells back home" because during WWII women worked in the factories to help the war effort while all of the men were drafted into combat. |
