| Dr. Dog – Mirror, Mirror Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
This song is definitely about depression and trying to cope with it. Looking in the mirror and seeing nothing in return, being numb and not being able to see or feel hope. Depression and mental illnesses (i.e Bi-polar) ebb and flow. First verse is about the narrator's issues being stirred up and brought to the surface. And trying to joke it off instead of fixing the problem/source. Being so tired you cannot sleep is oretty obvious. Having secrets about secrets, and trying to hide that something is going on. The church is figuritive, I think the church is his mind- trying to cope, to find meaning/resolution/answers. But blackbirds (symbolic extension of something evil: bad thoughts/negativity/addiction? Etc) are still there, waiting. But he doesn't want to see his name in stone (as in gravestone- being suicidal)- which I'm guess means he has hope. Tying a string around your finger has an entire origin story- with the literal translation of "keeping the spirit of life" and became a symbol of not forgetting. So I think the second verse is about having hope, going out and trying to be normal- buy a guitar to make music and distract yourself/heal. 'Looking high, looking low' to me has a duel meaning. Literal translation would be looking good one day and maybe having not-so-good day the next. Perhaps a bi-polar reference- or just going for being okay to depressed. However he could also mean looking all over for answers. Looking in the wrong direction or someone giving you bad directions (bad advice, drugs?). The last lyrics of the song are the saddest. I feel like they are a pretty literal translation of suicide. It isnt am umcommon method that people have walked straight into large bodies of water and never came back. But sometimes water is a metaphor for healing or truth, cleansing. So I am going to hope for latter.. Because I want the best of these guys- and for anyone else that this song strikes a chord with, because I think many people suffering can relate to it. This song is really fucking personal and brilliant. I discovered it at the wrong and yet right time in my life. These guys are so talented it hurts. |

| Oh definitely! In non-album versions he clearly says it. | |

I love the play on the old Ink Spots' song. All I know is that this song is about some dumb bitch (you have to be; to want to leave Luke) who is running from her life/problems. And for those who don't speak en français, Canard is french for duck. But the only thing I'm 100% about is that Mitch's bass on this song is aaaaa-mazing! The first time I heard it I think I peed my pants a little. It was just so perfect. |

Lyrics corrections: -3rd verse: it's 'I saw you at Amoeba Records' (well-known hipster record store in LA) -4th verse: it's 'I saw you at the Arclight' (well-known hipster cinema) also, I saw you shopping at the Trader Joe's (well-known SoCal natural grocery store) These poorly recorded lyrics have been copy and pasted all over the internet- which is a shame because the lyrics are AMAZING and HILARIOUS! I guess you might have to understand SoCal hipster culture to find the humour in the song. |

| Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| He is saying cheer leading- he's trying to encourage himself to make the relationship work. To "sow" means to plant. As in planting seeds. He's talking about giving the relationship a second chance and re-planting seeds (seeds= beginning of a relationship)for it to grow. | |
| Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Y Control Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Yeah. the "women" she's referring to is herself. | |
| Born Ruffians – Red Elephant Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is exactly what the song means. It's about trying to quit a relationship- but not being able to, when being with them feels so right. (and yes. the red elephant is most definitely his penis) | |
| Born Ruffians – I Need A Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think the narrator feels like he needs something to believe in. It sounds like he's tired of partying all night and sleeping all day. And just wants to be self-actualized- whether that's being defined by a religion or a belief system or having a goal; because he wants to proceed with life and make something of himself. that's my BASIC interpretation of it :D | |
| Born Ruffians – Barnacle Goose Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song (what I've interpreted it as...)is about the pressure of HAVING to grow up, instead of being able to do your own thing in your own time. For someone who wasn't able to go to college immediately after high school, they just take their time and work and do whatever makes them happy. But right around 21-22 there's a lot of pressure from everyone around you to finally "do something with your life", especially when everyone your age is already graduating. And you truly wake up frustrated with yourself that you're not something bigger than you really are. Which is where I think the narrator is at in his life. He's depressed that he hasn't made anything of himself yet, but he can't change-nor does he want to. And he probably is taking a lot of crap from others, about his goals. He's probably been told they are ridiculous- which depresses, frustrates, and confuses him-- yet he can't do anything about it. But towards the end of the song he becomes more optimistic about it, saying that if he keeps writing (songs?) and keeps dreaming of his goals (making music as a career)-- he believes he can achieve it. |

I have the same version which includes these lyrics: " although admitedly all these moments are just in my head, ill be thinking about them when im lying in bed, and i know that none of it will even come true, but in my mind im having a pretty good time with you" I don't belive this verse is pessimistic. I think he's just looking back on the relationship and thinking of the good times, even when things aren't going so well- which is NORMAL in a relationship. And I don't think it matters whether the song is pessimistic or optomistic because obviously no one goes into a relationship pessimistically. And he's being realistic about the relationship, saying that just might not even be together. (but that no matter what he'll remember what they had) And he says that she just might prove him wrong and that they'll still be together. Point is, not all love stories are these great, love-you-til-the-end-of-time, some are just short stories. Just as epic as the latter. |
