Toby got it right about the album revolving around a single subject. Each song on the album holds a different perspective or feeling or, in this case, story about the same general idea. This song is a huge metaphor that explains how he felt, losing someone special. He felt on top of the world, but his crown was ripped from him and he was exiled. I think the first part of the bridge could be directed at his fiance "I never told you then that I'd be easy to love" but it could also be directed to God - whom I also believe the chorus is directed at. I really love the bridge. He shows the magnitude of the situation and how humbling it is to have it all taken away, and then there's the glimmer of hope in his eyes as the lion is stuck there in utter despair: "I'm not alone...I'll be alright...Just take these bones and bring them back to life!" He paints this terrible picture for us, and then he shows us that he knows he'll make it, because he has God, who will never turn his back. Beyond the meaning and the lyrics I have to say that I love the music for this song. Its one of the heaviest songs Relient K has put out, its hard hitting and Ethan Luck KILLS it on drums (and the clever usage of the baseball bat). Matt is a really clever lyricist and I often times find myself chuckling at the pun made by the "lyin' or his pride." Great song, and really the best Relient K album to date. |

| I agree with Swft24, this album is kind of a regression from their previous works, but this song (although I prefer the acoustic version later released) and Deathbed, show some of that maturity. I feel like this album is kind of scattered and random. There is no prevailing ideal. To be honest, it feels kind of dead, even this song doesn't really live and breath, to me. The meaning of this song is really, blunt and doesn't need much explaining, which is another reason this album seemed kind of dead to me. There was a real lack of clever lyrics, which is one of my favorite things about Relient K. Not the best album, to me. | |

| Just saying, I like the lyrics for the verses way better than the chorus. The chorus kinda ruins it. Maybe not completely, but it does lessen the impact. I get why he did what he did in writing those lyrics, but I was kind of enjoying the darkness. | |

| Yes, this song uses some strong and morbid descriptions and metaphors, but I think it adds to the impact of the message, and using condemned would have thrown off the rhythm. Its strong, yes, but to me it just shows his passion. | |

| This song really is amazing. Everything about it reflects the life of this broken man, and then we see the change where he realizes he is to blame. He finds himself to be "the wolf" and he realizes that he killed this "lamb" that he had loved. Then he cries out in repentance for what he's done. With this last action, he is "carried home" and we have the musical interlude. To me, the whole interlude portion brings images of going to heaven, and meeting Christ and all of the angels; his transition into the life beyond the one we see. And then you have the duet-ish part with Jon Foreman and Matt Theissen from the point of Jesus. I really like this song, and the amount of instrumentation is ridiculous. The toy piano gives me the creeps every time, but it has a nice effect. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this record, but this song is amazing. | |

"I listen to the sirens as they sing me back to sleep I pray that no one's seriously hurt It feels like everything is dying At the pivot point of me I listen to the sirens tell me Things could still be worse" I picture him physically laying there, listening to the sirens. He gets to thinking about his own troubles and how "...everything is dying at the pivot point of me," but then he pulls himself together because "Things could still be worse." He's trying to pull it all together and make his problems seem small and manageable. "'Cause if you close your eyes and listen close You can hear the chapter close And it's already bound and better closed If you like the way the story goes" He feels a chapter of his life closing. He knows that this part of his book is coming to an end, and he even realizes that its "better closed". I think the "If you like the way the story goes" is almost sarcastic. He's sad at losing this person, and yet he knows he's better without her. This line transitions his thinking from the past into the future. He lights up and thus we get the next line. "The sun still burns the shadows out And there's nothing to complain about now" He has a better outlook now. The shadows that once haunted him are burned out by the rising of each new day, and he has no worries and nothing to complain about. And then he reflects: "'Cause if this was our destiny I'd treasure the fact And I give you what's left of me if I held back" I think here he's imagining the relationship if they weren't to leave each other. He's saying if we had stayed together, I would have given you my all and held nothing back. I would have loved you all the same. "But I don't need a soul Oh, I don't need a soul to hold Without you I'm still whole You and life remain beautiful You and life remain beautiful" He's saying, he doesn't need any person. He doesn't need a girl in his life for him to be happy. His life remains beautiful in every way. "Departing from the hospital, The news shows on your face too well, You're trying not to cough at all, it hurts" At first it appears he is talking about some one who has a disease, but I think of it more as a metaphor. The girl shows it too well. He knows and she knows whats going to happen. They're relationship is as he discribes this ill person. "All options are exhausted All your numbered days, are numbered small I miss you now, I love you And I know things could still be worse" Their relationship has run its course and there's no where else to go for them. He knows he has very little time left with her. He can feel it slipping away and it saddens him because he misses her and loves her, but he has to keep his head up. So he tells himself "Things could still be worse." Then we have the chorus again. "But if you close your eyes and listen close You can hear the chapter close And it's all rebound with better clothes If you like the way the story goes The sun still burns the shadows out And there's nothing to complain about now 'Cause if this was our destiny I'd treasure the fact I'll give what's left of me if I held back No, I don't need a soul No, I don't need a soul to hold Without you I'm still whole You and life remain beautiful You and life remain beautiful You and life remain beautiful" Then there's the little break down: "If you close your eyes and listen close You can hear that chapter close It's all been bound with better clothes If you like the way this story goes" This has the same meaning of course, but since I'm really crazy about the music aspect, I just have to say that this is my favorite part of this whole song. It creates parallels between the music and the lyrics. Everything calms down and quiets down, as if forcing you to listen close and then when they burst in with the "And the suns still burns..." part, the quiet is bursted and this bright, happy tone burns through. Really neat. The rest of the lyrics just repeat themselves: "The sun still burns the shadows out And there's nothing to complain about now Oh yeah, I don't need a soul to hold No I don't need a soul to hold Without you I'm still whole You and life remain beautiful No, I don't need a soul Oh, I don't need a soul to hold Without you I'm still whole You and life remain beautiful You and life remain beautiful" Anyway, this is my interpretation of the song. Sorry for the little musical stuff, I know this is a lyrics website, but I'm just a big fan of music. Hope this is helpful to somebody. Really love this album. Not my favorite song on the album, but still one of the best ones. Of course I thought the whole album was pretty great. Anyway, just some thoughts. |

| He's saying that he's willing to give her whats left of him if, for some reason, he had held back a part of his life from her. This is my take on it, hope it helps! | |
