Donald Fagen – New Frontier Lyrics 10 years ago
There was a sitcom series in late 60's to early 70's, (which was better than the movie, which many are that are offshoots of movies), called "the Odd Couple", the fictional location was New York but most of the studio filming was shot out in H wood. Felix(Tony Randall)was a photographer, a lover of opera, and the genteel past times, and an obsessive neat and cleaning freak. His room mate Oscar(Jack Klugman) a sports writer, was sloppy, gambled too much, smoked cigars. Both were recently divorced.

I never watched it as a kid back then, but since approx. 20 yrs ago, i always watch reruns and is one of my favorite sitcoms.

I can't remember whether it was Oscar or Felix, but one in passing mentioned his favorite fantasy of being locked up in a private bomb shelter with Tuesday Weld. It is probably coincidence but one never knows since Donald Fagen is from NYC, and is maybe still a new yorker at heart even though the recording industry moved to LA probably even before their debut album and so did probably Fagen and Becker. it would be interesting to find out if F and/or B got the verse idea below from the show. Of course its not stealing. I mean in hey 19, the character with the mid life crisis refers to Aretha Franklin while he's got the 19 yr old in his car who no doubt doesn't know who the great soul singer is. so he just wants her "to take me along while you slide on down" :)

"Yes we're gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It's just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We've got provisions and lots of beer
The key word is survival on the new frontier

Introduce me to that big blonde
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld
She's wearing Ambush and a French twist
She's got us wild and she can tell
She loves to limbo, that much is clear
She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier...."

Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 10 years ago
Chasing the Dragon means smoking opiates rather than injecting them. And there are methaphorical meanings about the craving for a better high, or the experiences one is having while high on opiates.

btw, benzodiazepines that millions of americans have been prescribed for years(including me) kill way more people who try to cold turkey off of benzos(e.g xanax, ativan, klonopin, et al)than those who cold turkey off of opiates.

Steely Dan – Deacon Blues Lyrics 10 years ago
blah blah blah blah...only Fagan and Becker know for sure. what i know for sure is the allusion to the Crimson Tide. Its one of few sports analogies i care for at least in the context of this song. Alabama football was a college powerhouse and won it seemed all the time for several decades and may be still is(i've been "sports free" for 20 years and proud of it. well sometimes i relapse and watch the real football we call soccer her in the us of a).
so: "...they got a name for the winners of the world,
I wanna name when i lose,
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues..."

I think most us common earthlings can really identify with those verses i just copied. because we lose a hell of lot more than we succeed. I want that on my tombstone or more likely on my cremation urn. Please don and walter, im a poor man, don't sue whomever the hell it is that gives a shit about me when i am dead, and force them to erase it. i sure will have chisled the songs and credits to you two.

Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics 10 years ago
It's like..?......go ask Fagen and/or Becker. Maybe they don't even know. Could be an exercise in DaDa or Absurdism. All i know is the dan made great music and once again still are. And Fagen continued to make great music after band broke up circa 1979. The "dan's" only flaw i think, and i do like donald fagen's voice, was letting Donald Fagen sing all the lead vocals after the first album can't buy a thrill. I mean i would get sick of listening to Pavarotti, rip, all the time.

Sex Pistols – God Save the Queen Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of the greatest rock and roll songs, lyrics and music. What the sex pistols brought back was primal dance as back in the rock and roll era of the 1950's(rock is a different genre which as great as it was only lasted circa 1966 to 1974. i love classic rock too like led zep, cream and hendrix). young people were getting tired of the long elaborate quitar virtuosos. So punk and later new wave were very refreshing. to me its a tie for the greatest "rock and roll" songs: chuck berry's johnny b goode and the pistols god save the queen. but the sex pistols get extra points for such a wonderfully politically charged lyrics.

The Kooks – Fuck the World Off Lyrics 11 years ago
I love this song. But i think the kooks need to be more diversified. the rest of their songs sound similar. they need to like sometimes let the instruments be in the forground more than voice and other times vis versa. and the singer should try some different styles, and so on. and they should write more than boy falls in love with girl songs, or girl drops guy like a rotten tomato. how about some thing about screw the bankers or even the galactic federation will save us earthlings, and so on and so forth.

As to the meaning of the song is basically this guy would do anything to make a special gal be his lover.

as for the term "fuck the world off", at least here in the states, in my region of the country it means blow everything off like work, school, payin your rent, to do something impractical but more important the daily grind, like going off into the countryside to catch butterflies, go downtown and talk to yourself or give the finger to cars going by, or most of all falling in love or finding that special someone or that special someone who is fading away from you and talk her back into loving you...whatever

The Velvet Underground – I'm Waiting for the Man Lyrics 16 years ago
i use to buy lou reed records. i think the greatest live "rock"(era circa 1966 to circa 1975, as distinct from rock and roll) recording was the performance that was made into two different albums "l reed live" and forgot the other. i bought both. hunter and wagner were amazing on guitars. as for reed, i always thought he was just a sick joke. i appreciate his lyrics a little more now but not much, just for "go to hell" moments.

btw, rock and roll was resurrected by the punk movement, circa 1976. everyone was getting sick of the long guitar solos and so was i. disco and country "rock" was all you heard before punk and then new wave(as distinct from the french cinema new wave of the late 1950's) i think if you want to explain to the aliens what rock and roll was you'd either send radio waves or a cd into space, and transmit the s pistols "god save the queen" or c berry's johhny be good, maybe both. for rock...my head just went blank. baroque: monteverdi, correli, bach, teleman, et al; classical era:mozart, hedyn, et al; romantic era: dvorak, schuman, brahms, et al; modern: boulez, schnittke, tippet, kagel, smitts, shoenberg, et al; post modern: good clean static at the ends of an analog fm radio, and whatever....like anyone gives a sh+t, i basically listen to old(1930's to early 1960's) adult standards way before that vh-1 sh+t, and mostly the muzak orchestral versions too. in fact i heard reed's take a walk on the wild side in muzak form. and i listen to the classical genre(except the romantic, 19th c stuff. the rapid mood swings in mood and volume drive me up a f ing wall now adays). i hate rock now except for some cream, hendrix, r gallagher once and awhile. only new music i'm into now is idm, yeah i know music made for emotional invalids and wimps..i don't care....

also, i find it interesting and perhaps revealing that junkies tell me the folks that have the most difficult time in rehab are not smack feinds but pussies like me who've been on rx benzos(e.g.xanax) for decades. supposedly my addiction is more deadly and difficult in withdrawal. i expereinced the latter, no fun, but maybe its because i'm a c*nt, like most benzo addicts.

its the fact that heroin and other drugs are illegal that causes all the death and high prices and ill health whilst addicted imho. all the violence in mexico i beleive to be the usa's sumptuary laws against demonized drugs, whatever...i could ramble all day and night....blah blah blah blah blah etcetera ad infinitum blah blah blah blah blah....

one more thing, search the uk house of parliment circa 2004. interesting testimony on why heroin should be legalized....for one you take the manufacture and sale of dah sh+t out dah hands of the thugs and lily- white-front launderers, i.e. put them out of business, make the smack safe(which it is relative to some legal rx's, if it were manufactured off the street and in a legal "factory". of course it would still be addictive but so is alot of sh+t) etc. basically life is a choice of lesser evils and legal addcition is by far the lesser evil compared to the illegal and violent illegal drugs business and sales. illegal drugs ramifications for all society is like second hand smoke but much worse....
