| I'm not gonna start arguaing about religion, but, religion is not meant to but intellectualized the way we do it. It completely discredits it. In a deeper sense most of Dustins songs are about God; a spiritual battle to be more accurate. Air has to do with forgetting ans remembering. Like air it is always flowing. In an instant it can push you to such a low and the insatant after bring you such a high. We hate it for making it so har dfor us to stick to a goal path, mindset. But in an other sense it thos eof the air sign are blessed because they can just as easily be saved. | |

| The four elements, refers to astrological signs; everyone has a different element depending on your date of birth. Understanding each sign and the specific direction its heading toward is the key to understand these songs especially the last sonnets. This song deals with the greatest challenge facing the water sign; that of arrogance, pride, spitefulness. Water signs have trouble not changing; like waves and water always flowing. The sea is just a metaphor for sensitivity and ones relation to the outside world. Water is sensitive, always flowing, it's hard to stay on track, even with the best of maps, because regardless of your plans, something always comes up; you have trouble sticking to it. Often the only to get something done is through pride. The purpose for water signs: overcome pride. Each sign has it's own moral. | |

Firstly, Astrologically speaking, the earth sign has the weaknest of having trouble changing, when compared to the other signs (water changes the most). It's very helpful to know astrology when trying to interpret the Alchemy Index. This song is about coming back to God, kindof like Dustin's solo song Please Come Home.It is also existentialist: "not your spirit but your SHAPE"- he is saying existence preceds essence. "All edens wealth before your eyes I fathom not you wanted to escape'- he's talking bout rebelling; temptation; intellectuality; doubt; skepticism; sin (which is the opposite of faith, read Sickness unto Death by Kierkegaard, dustin surely did) He is saying, and arriving at the same conclusion as Dostoevsky, Kafka, Kierkegaard, that after so much doubting, one is still empty inside and the only turht that they will find is God's truth. Once they know that God exists, they are unable to have faith he does-and all benefits of this knowledge is lost. God does not want you to know of his existence, he asks that you have faith. The song is saying, that in the end, you wont be rested until you stop thinking and doubting and you just accept who and what you are and that God loves and forgives you; Now safe beneath their wisdom and their feet, Here i will teach you truly how to sleep. He is talking about the wisdom and the feet of (advocates of, Knight of faith, read Fear and Trembling, which is what the messenger is based on) religion; the bible and its teachings. Have faith, and sleep. Because objectivity is like fire it destroys; hence child of DUST. Why does it destroy? Because you lose your life in speculative thought and doubt; you cant commit to anything. |

OK. It seems pretty obvious to me what this song is talking about. Dustin reads a lot of christian philosophy. We've seen references to Kierkegaard in other songs (mesenger) and arguably others. This song is about or inspired by St.Augustine's " The City of God". In the City of God, Augustine talk about being a citizen of the city of man, or citizen of the city of God. The citizen of the City of God has higher priorities than to listen and abide by the state and mundane trivilaities that go with it. His dedication is in the city of God- that of the eternal realm.in a sense he is talking about an afterlife; it's implied. But the point is that his mission and service is that of God and Jesus Christ rather than what we are so often occupied with these days. st. Augustine is a neo-platonist, so another way to look at this is by looking at Socrates- how he was able to renounce to everything, money, a home, and eventually life. He was a citizen of some other place. The eternal realm is the truth; the truth of God. The city of God is in that "realm". "songs of forever" "city that endures, where all is made new" (forgiveness , love, hope; these are the prime values of the city of God) Amazing song. Amazing lyrics. |
