Marina and the Diamonds – Seventeen Lyrics 15 years ago
the verses are pretty clear except for the chorus. I think 'could never tell you what happen the day I turned seventeen' is about losing her virginity or innocence, or something like that. Rape came to my mind first but if this is what she meant by it, the song would have had a more heavy note to it to let the listeners feel the feelings she wanted to express. I think the day she turned seventeen was a significant day in her life that made her grow and see the world in a much mature eye level. I so like the song. I even sing to it in the bathroom. :D

Dido – Mary's In India Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know but I've always thought that this has some connection with her song "see the sun" about a guy who lost his girlfriend, which is in the same album of this song. That's what I thought the first time I heard the song that "Mary's India" means Mary's heaven. It's easy to co-relate cos India or Buddhism tackles about enlightenment which you can also relate to being in heaven. And the line "But/That as the sun rises on Mary sets on him" means as Mary is beginning the after life, Danny's life is also breaking. And "But as the sun sets on Mary, it's rising on him" means that as Mary's life ended so as Danny is starting a new one without her. And her and Danny falling in love will reassure Mary that she can continue on her journey peacefully cos she doesn't have to worry about Danny that which brings me back to the title Mary's India. Mary's happiness is that she can die peacefully knowing that Danny will be ok. I don't know. I am putting two and two together.

I know this is not the meaning of the song, at least to Dido. But who says a song has to have only one meaning? This is what it means to me. lol :D

Devendra Banhart – Little Boys Lyrics 16 years ago
an artist can make art that is not necessarily about him, but since he made it, it is impossible not to put a part of himself into his own works. this can be a song written on the perspective of a schizophrenic hermaphrodite as devendra stated on interviews. a playful imagination of putting oneself on someone else's shoe (and I thought that is what artist are known for)

but at the same time, putting his own perspective on the song, it can also be about his somewhat frustration of falling in and out of love with women that come and go in his life. and maybe he sees these women like little boys, like him, they dont really know what they want and they cant seem to ever get enough.

i think this song is inspired by his wanting to make a song that will not be played in starbucks resulting to choosing a perspective that will playfully tease an outrage to the people and reflecting how he and most singles live out their lives now adays. like little children, wanting more and more, jumping from one toy to another, wanting too many at the same time and never really seem to ever get enough.
