I think the lyrics, the chorus in particular, are sarcastic. I think they're sung in a knowing, mocking tone. I base this in large part off the first verse when he says "take all the courage you have left/ wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head". Also, the prelude to that, about "rate yourself and rape yourself" is almost like saying she had no self esteem, or was bi-polar or something similar (well, at least a bit unbalanced). She builds herself up, revels in the praise of it all, then goes completely the other way. From that I gleam that he was in a relationship that has broken down and in the fallout, the aftermath of it all and the blame game he's sarcastically saying "yeah, it was all my fault, you were the only one with anything to lose in all this, isn't that right?" It's like she's manufactured reasons to end their relationship and is running away from the consequences of it. |
