Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics 2 years ago
From an inteview with Yusuf in British GQ:
Tell me about “Father And Son”, specifically. Where did that song stem from?

... Essentially, it was about Nicholas and Alexander, the last tsars of Russia, and against that there’s another story about this family in the farmland, in the country. And the father, of course, basically wants to keep things as they are, while the son is really inspired by the revolution. He wants to join. And so that’s the inspiration for that song. That’s why I’m able to represent both sides – though I feel that my preference, my emphasis, was on the son’s side, and the father’s arguments were not quite as strong as the son’s, which is interesting. Change is basically the theme of the song.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 15 years ago
The secret cord that David played/composed is the phrase Hallelujah - the description of the cord is the sound of the word, syllable by syllable. "It goes like this, the fourth (Hal being a fourth in length) the fifth (le, slightly shorter, is a fifth) the minor fall (lu - which lowers the tone when following le), the major lift (yah - which goes way up when following lu)

The Beatles – Something Lyrics 16 years ago
Actually this is George Harrison song sung to his wife Pattie Boyd (who also is the subject of Clapton's Layla), who could never conceive, even with repeated in vitro fertilization attempts, so I don't think there is a pregnancy involved.

Marilyn Manson – The Fight Song Lyrics 16 years ago
Why is it that christian commentators refuse to see any artist they enjoy as not a christian, no matter how clear they make it in the lyrics? Marilyn Manson is a Satanist. Manson was given the title of Reverend Manson by Church of Satan founder Anton Lavey. And before anyone says this, let me say that the "if he is a satanist, then he believes in God, and is therefore a Christian" argument doesn't work
1. prefering Satan to Christ is definitely not Christian, if you don't believe me ask people at Church and see what they say.
2. Satanists also do not tend to believe in God, Christ, or Satan as actual beings. Satanists of Lavey's variety view Satan as principle, not a supernatural being.

Not that it matters, but I'm neither.

If you aren't able to accept that Manson is not a christian, you REALLY have no business posting on Manson. Sorry!

David Bowie – Moonage Daydream Lyrics 16 years ago
Per Wiki
Story: The alien messiah is revealed/created, and his destiny to save the world from the disaster in "Five Years" is also hinted at, as well his fate as the quintessential "soul lover". In terms of the plot, this is one of the most important songs as it describes the creation of Ziggy from a combination of religion, romance, sexual freedom, rebellion, and passion; he metamorphoses into the archetypal rock star.

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 16 years ago
to give away a loaded gun is a good way to make sure somebody gets hurt, but who knows who it will be? Much like cheatingHe knows what he is considering is extremely dangerous, unpredictable, and potentially explosive emotionally. The "is that alright with you?" seems to be directed at the girl of temptaion after it's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you - it's the wrong time for somebody new", but to the girl he's in a relationship with currently after "it's the wrong kind of place to be cheating on you". I'm thinking overall, what's on his mind is "if only I could know what they would all say once this has played out". The "If you/I don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it?" I think may be him saying he doesn't want to make the choice, it's too difficult and he wants one of the do something drastic to tell him who he needs to be with.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
The word itself is the secret cord by the way - the sound of the word hallelujah is described in the song:

Well it goes like this:
the fourth (hAL), the fifth(Leh)
The minor fall(Lu)
and the major lift (yA)
The baffled king composing Hal-le-lu-jah

great job on the back up singers putting such a major lift on the "jah"

He's a Zen Buddhist now, grew up extremely jewish (was told he was a direct descendant of Aaron), and at this point was probably what you would call a "seeker"

Young MC – Bust A Move Lyrics 16 years ago
The plot is simple. A young Algerian, Meursault, afflicted with a sort of aimless inertia, becomes embroiled in the petty intrigues of a local pimp and, somewhat inexplicably, ends up killing a man. Once he's imprisoned and eventually brought to trial, his crime, it becomes apparent, is not so much the arguably defensible murder he has committed as it is his deficient character. The trial's proceedings are absurd, a parsing of incidental trivialities--that Meursault, for instance, seemed unmoved by his own mother's death and then attended a comic movie the evening after her funeral are two ostensibly damning facts--so that the eventual sentence the jury issues is both ridiculous and inevitable.

Or am I thinking of "The Stranger" by Albert Camus?

Billy Joel – Vienna Lyrics 16 years ago
oh and sweet, yes absolutely, in the figurative sense, the borderline is that crossroads in life. In the literal sens, the city was divided after WWII and had 5 (I think) zones each under the control of a different nation, which made it the crossraods of eastern and western Europe.

Billy Joel – Vienna Lyrics 16 years ago
Billy Joel talked about this one on storytellers, his father, whom he didn't met until he was an adult, was living in vienna. When Billy went ot visit him, he saw an old woman sweeping the street, and thought that was horrible. His father said he was wrong, the old ladies life stilled served a purpose, she had something to contribute to the community, not put out pasture. It was a revelation for Billy, that he didn't have to do it all while he was still young, he could slow down and enjoy things a little. The Musical style is influenced by the score of "The Third Man", a fine Orson Welles film.
The Crazy child juvenile is Billy Joel.

Sarah McLachlan – Dear God Lyrics 16 years ago
to address a few points
1. the song was definitely written by an atheist, check out the extended interview
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=34883466&blogID=198104070
2. To get hung up on whether or not the author was an atheist or not misses the point of the song entirely. To put it a single sentence, "I can no longer believe in an all good, all knowing, all powerful God, as the suffering of the innocent, often caused by his creation (nature), would not be allowed to happen by such a deity, whose worshippers believe is perfectly good despite his having drowned every baby in the world in the great flood". Or in a few words, the problem of natural evil.
3. In respect to how happy one can be as an atheist, I think that for the most part it balances out. Day to day, the atheists I know are happier, as they have less guilt and a more positive view of human nature. The death of loved ones can be significantly harder to recover from however.
4. Whether or not I am an atheist is irrelevant as to the value of any of the above.
