The Swell Season – Two Tongues Lyrics 10 years ago
This is my favourite song on the Swell Season record and I can't find a single instance of them performing it live, which makes me think it must be pretty personal, which would make sense from the lyric.

Glen Hansard – This Gift Lyrics 10 years ago
Such a beautiful song. It's talking about the sort of thing that often happens in life where something comes into your life unexpectedly and changes everything. It's saying that you need to keep your faith and open yourself up in order to receive those gifts from life.

Glen Hansard – Song of Good Hope Lyrics 10 years ago
Glen said he wrote this for a friend of his who had cancer. It's about gathering up the courage to face something difficult and get through it, and supporting someone who is going through that journey.

Markéta Irglová – For Old Times' Sake Lyrics 10 years ago
Pretty sure this is about her relationship with Glen Hansard. Of course people could try and apply that meaning to all of their post-2009 music but I think this one is pretty clear if you know their story.

She's saying they had a wonderful relationship but just drifted apart naturally. He wishes things could be the same as they used to be but she says to just let it go and be happy for what they had and their remaining friendship.

Hey Rosetta – Young Glass Lyrics 14 years ago
Sorry, that should be Franny Glass that I said, not Zooey. Oops.

The Swell Season – The Rain Lyrics 14 years ago
After I heard this song was about The Frames I started thinking that perhaps this is Glen's response to everyone who complained about him "abandoning" the Frames for The Swell Season.

Just before the rain came down
the sun came out at last
and as for all assumptions made
and questions never asked

The Swell Season experienced unexpected success and he ran with it. A lot of people made assumptions that this meant The Frames were over or that he was only doing it because TSS was more successful in the USA...

i know we're not where i promised you we'd be by now
but maybe its a question of who'd want it anyhow
okay we're not what i promised you we would become
but maybe its a question of how much you really want

Saying TSS is an evolution of his career and that yes, he's no longer the same musician he was in 2001, but would either he or the fans have really wanted the music to stay the same forever?

Then the "there's plenty more where that came from now" part is saying that neither band is done, and his career certainly is not, so stop complaining and speculating. Who knows if that's right, but that's the way I've seen it!

Anna Nalick – In My Head Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song! I think it's definitely about the "relationship" a music fan has with their favourite musician. She looks up to this person so much, loves their music and maybe is attracted to them too, and they're perfect in her fantasies of them. The music makes her not feel so alone, and perhaps she imagines having a real relationship with them. She then says that if she was to meet them in real life she would pretend that she doesn't idolize them that much to not embarrass herself but she still goes on fantasizing about this perfect person. She learns from them and is inspired by them, and this song is both thanking them and sort of lecturing herself on getting so obsessed with them. It's a very sweet song and I think everyone who's a big music fan can probably relate.

Hey Rosetta – Young Glass Lyrics 14 years ago
I've heard this is inspired by JD Salinger's novel Franny and Zooey, and is directed at the character of Zooey Glass.

Hey Rosetta – Welcome Lyrics 14 years ago
Tim said this was written for his friends' baby in utero, saying to it that while the world is messed up and life can be hard, the baby is a miracle and can be hope for the world. Beautiful song - I wish I was the kid it was written for! haha

The Limousines – Internet Killed the Video Star Lyrics 14 years ago
To me this song is depressing and hopeful at the same time. On one hand, they're saying that the Internet has indeed killed the way music used to be and has changed us as a generation (everyone thinking they're important and "everything we're doin no ones' ever done before"). But on the other, they're saying that because the Internet has brought information to the people in a way nothing ever did before, kids are now feeling free to discover music they wouldn't necessarily have if pop music was still entirely in the hands of MTV, and that at heart music fans will still have the same heart, even if the music doesn't. We're more free but less free at the same time because of the Internet, which I think is a really interesting observation.

Hey Rosetta – Bandages Lyrics 14 years ago
To me this song and a couple of other HR songs (The Simplest Thing is the first that comes to mind) sound like they're about someone dealing with depression and anxiety. Perhaps it's because I've been there but the lyrics about taking the bandages off "the nothing weighs a ton" and stepping out in the sun made me think of that, and that it's the narrator trying to encourage someone to be happy again. Whatever the interpretation this is such a gorgeous song.
