Within Temptation – Bittersweet Lyrics 16 years ago
This song, to me, is about someone who has lost their lover, or someone very important
And has never told them that they loved them;
"If I had told you, you would have listened, you would have stayed."
And they think that if they would have said so, it would have changed their life.
"It would never have been the same."
But I think that it seems that the person had to go anyway
"All our time would have been in vain, 'cause you had to go."
And I think that he is planning on coming back to her
Because she seems to be waiting pretty faithfully.

Could apply to someone leaving for war I suppose.
Or for college, or something like that.
It could have many meanings.

Within Temptation – Forgiven Lyrics 16 years ago
It makes sense that this is sang from a parents point of veiw
It would tie in the unconditional love well.
I think the part "Why not me before you?" really reveals this
Because every parent dreams that his/her kid outlives her/him by a lot.
And it sounds like suicide "You were looking for the great escape to chase your demons away."
My personal take was that it was about a very sheltered child
Who, when left to face the real world, couldn't take it, so they killed themselves.
The parent, who loves the child so much it "hurts their soul"
Misses them, and is deeply hurt, veiwed when they break down "everything turned out so wrong, why did you leave me in silence?"
But forgives them, because they love their child unconditionally. "all that stands:forgiven."
She/he has forgiven his/her child.
