It seems as though the song is about some stoner/slacker friends that hold him back. "I gave you warning But you weren't having what I say" :: Under the influence, the stoner wouldn't have anything of what he said. The warning would mean nothing. "And we could keep sitting around Watching the paint flake off the walls" :: The stoner is lazy. "There's lots of gray shades But that don't make black the same as white" :: The stoner has tried to defend his addiction/lifestyle, probably by saying it's not that bad, he has it under control, others are much worse, etc. However, none of it justifies basing his entire life around weed. "You said it feels good Like that makes everything all right" :: I think you can make that connection -- the stoner feels good when toking. "Gather round the fire And see what's burning down" :: The fire being the joint, what's burning down is their future. The rest I can't yet make an interpretation of, but I'll post when I do. The music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrXpQ4cBWGk) doesn't support this hypothesis at all, though. But they could be entirely unrelated. |
