drug addiction. opiates? then being sent off to a rehab and/or sober living. still obsessing over the substance and/or still using. He's saying, "look, don't expect much from me" |

I'm not one of these "Courtney killed Kurt" wackjobs, but I did always think the lines:
"put me up above the boy
the one I love, I must destroy"
was the most suspicious post-Kurt lyrics she came up with. |

| Sleater-Kinney – Night Light Lyrics

haunting. mysterious [who is this "light?"...a woman? a deity?] and a crushing vocal performance for the final track on the final and penultimate album from an all-female rock group. i think of this song in times of tribulation as my guiding force yet assign no person or thing to what i think of when i consider the "light?". When i dust this song off every few weeks or so, i listen to it over and over. How does someone stand up in the face of the random and cruel world and not only live and not be jaded, but excel? Beats me. Corin, who are you talking about? |

the song is about opiates. Christopher has mentioned a battle with opiates in recent interviews and bio pieces on the band. I wish him luck in his recovery as he is a great singer and songwriter. I also think its really awesome that he is a member here at SongMeanings and takes the time out of his day to post here with corrections or some insight to what his songs are about. |

...more specifically, a big commercial or government land development project is being forced on the indigenous people of wherever that specifically benefits the have's over the have not's.
"walk with me after the show/ maybe we can find a way through the minefield in the snow"
--the ramifications of the land development of the indigenous is covered up and unseen by them in most cases but they know it exists.
I also feel like this is an occupying force. That's why I can't shake the imperialism part of it. |

The decline of an empire on the grounds of environmental destruction and uneven wage scales. I love the disjointed guitar "solo" in the middle. The narrator is jaded with liberal guilt about the situation. His dad being a government man and all and seemingly part of the problem with "the blood on my hands" lyric. His mother turned away or lost her faith perhaps [born of a "pillar of salt"] Imperialism, slave labor, economic inequality, pollution, who is to blame? |

well this is among the very best Hootie songs...and not a comment. First of all, Darius' vocal delivery in this song is so powerful. At the time of this comment, Darius has a thriving country career and I wonder if people realize how criminally overlooked Fairweather Johnson is as an album.
Oh, and the song is about a breakup or maybe a struggle of acceptance in general. he's distraught, but can find comfort amongst his buddies. |

this is ridiculously good. first time i heard it, i was hooked.
I think the song is about our insignificance in the world in some way. We are subjected to the whims of the working world and how the processes of nature are always turning. He is either addressing a creator, mother nature, and/or a lover that has profound affect on his thoughts and feelings. an absolute gem folks. |

the best song she's ever done or will do. i had so much promise for this album after hearing this lead single...to me the rest of the album is an overwrought commercial bomb. still, this song is amazing. |

makes me cry. I love it. I think its about someone who messed up in the courtship of a girl. it's what he wanted most, but he made a fool of himself. he wonders how long his heart will pay for this? |

I'll take a stab. His girl is cheating or at least dodging him ("say you stay at home with the flu/ find out from friends/ that wasn't true"). Dares or hopes she goes out walking in the night again so he can follow/stalk/seek her whereabouts. So now he'll be her shadow or "ghost". Reminds me a bit of the "every breath you take" type obsession. Seems as though they had a relationship and she was really close to letting him in or get closer than anyone else had (the "live underwater" part...she mentally "drowned" other mates??) The rhythm section in this song is intoxicating. |

I just want to talk about the arrangements in the song, which to me, are absolutely perfect. dramatic drums, piano, synths...shit's crashing everywhere...the vocals come right over the top at the right time...i could go on forever. the producer is god. i'm going to find out. |

I love how the Pumpkins are like, "we'll have about 100 b sides (75 of which are like mind blowingly amazing, including this song) and we'll just decline to release our best work...instead you get Machina." Then Machina II is far greater as well. Billy just making you chase around the good music folks. They could of released a quadruple album twice over from 1994-2000 there is so many b-sides. |

Don't know why this song catches so much shit. I love it. Sammy's vocal DELIVERY in the song is achingly beautiful and unique. the words are a bit cheesy...but man those arrangements are LUSH. Van Halen went through a keyboard-y phase with "1984" and "5150" albums and I think they showed they could really flourish this way. |

one of the most underrated songs of all time. i'm haunted every time she slowly coos, "laaaaately...i'm not the on-ly one". great comment above about the string section carrying you from one part of the song to the other. |
