Trying to wrap my head around the lyrics, but they're pretty cryptic in this song. Here's what I can make from the context of the album. I think the narrator is referring to himself as a marauder, he's secretly 'raiding' his hometown on his return. I also think this song is about him attending church or some other religious function. Staining the soil may be metaphorically referring to him being considered tainted by the townspeople. "Beloved fraternity" probably refers to the council of the cross. "Red eyes probe ..." is either describing him looking on the scene or a priest or something observing the crowd from the front. The whole atmosphere is the same as before, stilted and depraved religious ceremony. Handcarved death I think refers to images of Christ's crucifixion. Stoneladen aiscles might refer to the church. Our narrator must hide his scars (both physical and emotional), lest he is detected by the people. The white hands might be the hands of the churchgoers. In the next verse, I think the "poisoned glare" and "searing beams" are the same as the red eyes in the first verse. I think it is our protagonist searching for Melinda, but it could also be the searing gaze of the priests. Not sure what the "undisguised manmade nova" is... "Adoring what never has been Some will bring with them all they have seen " What never has been seems to me to be a relationship with Melinda. The second line is like "some things are never forgotten", but could also be talking about holding grudges. In the acoustic refrain he thinks about staying there. What would they care? "Still brooding, soothing clam That rigid, twisted face Blank godhead, tear my name Lost virtue, frantic lust " Maybe this is about him finally laying eyes on Melinda? I initially imagined him staring up at an image of Christ. "Searching my way to perplexion In crumbling faith I saw her Bearing her pain in the wilderness The gleam of her eyes In that moment she knew" Perplexion is obviously meant to be a state of being perplexed. He'd been searching for Melinda for so long... He finally finds her and he senses that her faith isn't so strong. Not sure if the wilderness is meant to be metaphorical or not. Either way, she recognizes him and he knows. |

| Devin Townsend – Things Beyond Things Lyrics | 11 years ago |

A memory of a fantasy, and another memory mingling with that fantasy. "And I know this one's the light/And I know this one's the dark" = 2 things This song is about secrets. Deep, intimate secrets. The specific secret(s) Devin is talking about don't matter because we can only guess at them. He tells us only a little and only vaguely. This is on purpose because secrets are secrets and he doesn't really want to tell us. Thus, the song ends abruptly. Don't try to get inside; these things are all just things. And these things aren't yours. |

| Savatage – Edge Of Thorns Lyrics | 11 years ago |

"A study made from winter Of summers long ago" This song is a bittersweet reminiscence of an old lover. "I have seen you on the edge of dawn Felt you there before you were born Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns" He remembers her as his soulmate, as perfection. He had done so much... But then comes what is, for me, the most significant part of the song: "But I don't think about you anymore" But, you do think about her. 'You', the speaker; 'you', the listener who identifies with the song. You're thinking about her as you wrote this song; every time you perform the song; every time you listen to the song; right now as you're reading this, as I'm typing this. I feel that this same theme (the same relationship) is revisited in 'Conversation Piece'. "I haven't thought about you for awhile..." |

to me, this song is about pushing throught, reaching out past conventional 'reason' to the infinite possibilities that beyond... embrace the random, look at things from a different perspective... sometimes you need to let go of your reason and just let your pure will and instinct guide you everytime i listen to this i get something new out it... its more than amazing really... right now the realization and enlightenment that is flowing into and pouring out of me brings tears to my eyes... anythings possible and if we realize that we can rid ourselves of whatever it is thats holding us back and rise up, evolve to a new place... dont let anything hold you back from what you can be... we may just go where no ones been... i hope this song is as much to everyone else as it is to me, if not more Spiral out Keep going... |
