Phoenix – Lisztomania Lyrics 15 years ago
It's very weird - I hate pretty much everything else Phoenix has done (other than their Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands Bob Dylan cover), but I LOVE this song.

It's addictive and cheerful and ambiguous and ridiculous and I really really like it a lot.

The Antlers – Bear Lyrics 16 years ago
This song confuses me so much. If it were taken out of the context of Hospice, it would almost undeniably be about a couple getting an abortion. But with Hospice in particular, I think the themes and concepts of the album as a whole are more important than the individual lyrics and what you can draw from them. I feel like this song isn't meant to be taken literally, although if you do, it could really easily be about getting an abortion.

The opening notes sound like 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', the most common child's lullaby - even if it's not supposed to be about an actual abortion, the allusion to such a famous ode to childhood is kind of brilliant.

Hospice is beautiful and hearbreaking; I really only listen to it as a whole, and I think that's the way it works the best.

Listening to this song hurts.

Totally worth it, though.

Okkervil River – Black Lyrics 16 years ago
I would never have figured on my own that this was a song about molestation or abuse or father/daughter rape (that part kind of came out of nowhere for me).

I always assumed it was about a girl who's been completely fucked over, and the new guy who loves her wants to fuck up guy who broke her so badly, but she can't let go of the first guy enough to want him hurt... sort of like what's going on in OR's 'Song Of Our So-Called Friend'. I think.

I guess I the argument for the sexual abuse theory is pretty strong, but it makes me kind of sad; the whole reason I fell in love with this song is because the situation I saw in the lyrics is exactly what's happening to me right now. To think of it as a much darker, more disturbing song makes it creepy AND less personal.

But I have to say, I can see the connections you guys pointed out. Until my own personal life stops being EXACTLY the way I see these lyrics, though, I think I'll look at them my way.

Okkervil River – Song of Our So-Called Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song.

It was the first Okkervil River song I ever heard; an ex-boyfriend put it on a mix for me when we first started dating.

It's difficult now because the lyrics ended up describing my current real life situation after my ex and I broke up. Seriously -- it's almost creepy how applicable this song is to my life after that relationship.

I'll always love it, but it's still kind of hard for me to listen to. Dramatic, huh?
