love CS for always experimenting with their stuff but was totally caught off guard by this first song. this song is definite evidence of a theme that runs throughout the album. a lot of people have posted that its the band expressing regret over switching labels but i see it just as a lot of regrets/growing up/thinking back about life. this song, in particular, speaks to the idea of "did my life go the way it should have?" the idea of nobody wanting to sit in the driver's seat is probably his expression that no one wants time to slip away (which is one of the two things that happens when you drive...the other being arriving at your destination, which in this case, we never know where we're going so it doesn't matter) signs, obviously, can be anything. perhaps an address to materialistic tendencies of having arrived as a member of capitalist society, when he says "i don't know where i am without them / in our lives" (?) or even just the recognition of others. |

first off, i think the song is about a couple who have been dating but haven't moved into the bf/gf stage. like when the girl goes out with friends and brings the guy along, her friends get pissed that he shows up too (rain on the parade/smiles turn to frowns). and this whole "hanging onto a word" business probably refers to "boyfriend" title and the duties it entails. and the song progresses to how he gains attention from others but it leads to the girl creating misconceptions about his behaviors (your head is full of words, full of words that don't mean anything at all). the intro/chorus/outro section communicates his feelings that he doesn't want to be the "bf" and how he'll never meet her lofty expectations. the "i'm just feeling sorry for myself" part feels like "so what if you can say that about me...it's how i feel." |

| i wonder if it's the snorting part is a reference to how he uses poetry in his songs. or maybe it's just literal haha. the more i hear these songs, the more i think about the recent chiodos events. | |

i think the title is big apple big heart. thanks for the lyrics though. my opinion has been skewed by the recent news but just consider it. "i'm about to leave this town that's left me feeling so empty"...reference to problems w/ chiodos, maybe? "and i'll show i'm only alright when i'm up there, i'm only me when i'm up there"...he forgets about all his problems when he performs thus being "alright" "as i pack my things i check both my empty pockets, and there's still nothing there, no, there's still nothing there"...since we keep important things in our pockets, things that are/were important to him have disappeared and in his heart, he hopes they haven't so he seems to check again (sounds like he checks twice in the song). "i turn and smile to her as i walked out her door and i said i'm only alright when i'm up there, i'm only me when i'm up there" draws so much emotion from me. it feels like he tries to communicate both bliss and despair. so far, fav song off the debut. |
