there should really be some way for me to edit the lyrics myself, but because I love this song so so so much, I will help you out here. it's coming back to things you've said to me i'm hiding away from reality denying myself all the better parts and you slip back and say "don't take it hard" and then i find it hard to sleep at all wishing i could give someone else a call someone that's closer closer close to me forgetting someone might've come over me do you know the bar? the way to the bar? and it's clear and bright now from the statements to the lies from the big black coffin to the black under your eyes but if life is complex why present a thing and when i close my eyes i still see this face looking upon me, still upon me, still no competition over ecstasy Find ebb and tide (?) and you're confronting me i will admit all of my weaker parts but i'll shut up if you don't want my point my point of view to stand against your own perhaps you're better off on your own but i don't need to be put down this way i'm going down this way but you can stay do you know the bar? the way, to the bar? but it's clear and bright now from the statements to the lies from the big black coffin to the black under your eyes but if life is complex and when i close my eyes i still see this face looking upon me, still upon me, still and it's black because you know it will never work for me and it's black because you know i don't want us to be another opportunity wasted by all of these rules... (?) best friend's and let's pretend and it's clear and bright now from the statements to the lies from the big black coffin to the black under your eyes anyway, not perfect, but i fixed some things. this is a toughie. |

Alright, check it out. I don't think it's you tested your "metal', I think it's you tested your "mettle", which means a person's ability to cope well with difficulties or face a demanding situation with resilience. She left him to try and go out on her own, to be an independent person and to face the world herself. I like your idea about the "John Doe" and I pretty much think that line is the narrator mocking her "testing her mettle" by pretty much getting a new boyfriend and maybe having sex. That is the opposite of what she went out to do. As a side note, I really feel like this song completely describes the current state of the 3-year relationship I just got out of. A beautiful, and honest song if I do say so. |
