| Eric Clapton – My Father's Eyes Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song is about his son and his early death. Clapton was "lost" with no real direction, full of drug and alcohol addictions. His hectic life with Pattie Boyd also was part of this. This all changed when he had his son, Conor, with Lori Del Santo. That is why he talks about the light beginning to shine with lullabies and this seedling growing. He needs guidance on what to do, just like any new parent. That is when he realized that he could turn to God and straighten his life. Unfortunately, after only 4 years his son fell to his death. That is where the jagged edge appeared and he slipped into depression. People often express their faith in terms of the foundation of their life. His faith was weak and washed away. He continues to regret the loss of his son and disbelief in how it happened. He blames himself. Eventually he realizes that even with his loss, God is still with him and always has been. Some have said that the "father" is his own father. It isn't about him at all though, especially if you look at the time line. Clapton exclaims how his life was changed by his son and how strong the spiritual transformation he experienced was for him. His autobiography explains much of this. Both "Tears in Heaven" and this song are about his son. The latter is his recovery from his loss and turn to faith. |

Some seem to have the general idea, but they are off a bit. I might be a new love or one that is getting stronger, but no matter what, it is while things are good and look to be getting better. The whole point of not being let down and already being on the ground, is that he isn't letting himself get high expectations or let himself get too close. Relationships in the past have hurt him so deeply that he doesn't let his guard down. He enjoys her, he thinks there might be a future, but the voice and past history tell him to stay unattached. It is a love song, yes, but it is more about protecting yourself from rushing in emotionally. You never know when it might turn, and you might not see them again. Those who have been hurt enough by strong relationships failing can make the most sense of these lyrics. You want to get close to someone again, to fall in love... but you don't let yourself so you don't get let down... you stay grounded. |
