"Compare where you are to where you want to be and you'll get nowhere" I love this line! |

just my interpretation, but: maybe it's about two people deciding if they want a relationship to take off, but are just too held back by something. whether it be their friends or their surroundings or maybe even themselves. (Wretched, look at me, I've lost it, melting on the table In parking lots and markets I cant help it, loves you like a starfish loves the salty water Like a selfish daughter) --- k, so. she likes this guy, a lot. but maybe too much? does she feel like she's holding him back? "like a selfish daughter" (But I wrote the words to the swan song The author of the wrong And I said what I said and I meant it But now I regret it) --- i feel like she confessed her feelings to him, knowing at the time that the relationship was "wrong", and maybe he didn't receive the 'news' as she had hoped. (Foolish, how was I so careless Pawning off my treasure, the envy of an heiress Now my dollars are crumbled in my pocket How can I reclaim it? What if someone's got it?) --- perhaps she is starting to feel guilty about just throwing her feelings out there, at somebody who maybe doesn't want to hear it. "how can i reclaim it?" (How could the world have turned so ugly I am dying Could you touch me again? Touch me again) --- i think she is asking like "how is it we can't be together?" and coming to terms with the fact that NOT being a couple is the painful alternative that will leave them both better off. call me crazy, that's just how i saw the relation into evryday life. haha(: |

a lot of the lyrics are missing throughout the song, but i'll contribute one correction so that i can comment on it: "the things i chase, the status i crave it's nothing, it's nothing. **we invest in the bankers, and not in the maker - think about it! **and i am the culprit, i am no saint. how long will i stand here obstructing love's way?" to me, one of the most moving and powerful quotes off the album. this song is an amazing breakthrough of faith and love, and is definetly my favorite song off "of men and angels". beautiful record :) |

how does this not have any comments? this song is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! it's so calm and comforting, and i find myself fitting it into any kind of day. it can't be any more pure and for that, i appreciate. you can't get much better than this. :) my own personal interpretation is love, generally. or trying to love. |

maybe i'm not being conventional, but to me this song kinda sounded like knowing that somebody isn't good for you, contemplating being with them, and dismissing the idea reluctantly. like, you want to be involved, but you know it won't end well, so you don't even start. "I'll turn it off, in all my spite" ...does anybody else agree? |
