He's in love with a girl who he thought was in love with him But for whatever reason she leaves him, which he never knows (question mark and a scar), and moved on It is painful for him to watch her go from guy to guy and never be as happy as he thought she was with him (Cause she uses boys like bandages But the wounds remain the same) He doesn't keep trying to get her because he knows it has to be her decision, and possibly out of his own pride, refuses to chase (chasing after you won't change a thing) but they stay in contact because they need each other in their lives, but for different reasons (she won't let me come, she won't let me go) He probably feels like it would be easier to let her go if she found someone that made her happy (And I hope you find it through this endless wandering) because all he ever wanted to do was make her happy The next part describes the weight of this all getting to him He's late, possibly overcome with anxiety [I was late and my face was wet] And using alcohol or drugs to deal with it [toe-up], spending time alone [private jet] And he knows it's bad for him and sees it happening but doesn't know how, or maybe doesn't want to stop it because realizing he can't have her is worse than dying [And I gotta get it all but it takes a toll Well I guess you'll have to grow a soul Dark side giving me such a pull] The whole water landing metaphor is basically saying I can't hold it in anymore and I'm riding this feeling until it crashes possibly a mental breakdown He's going to give a last ditch effort to get her, but he doesn't know if the crash will kill him yet, because everyone reacts differently to the same situation [Some people scream, some people are gracious] Maybe she will decide he is the one for her after all and she [Put on your life vest, an oxygen mask] will be what lets him survive the crash Although he says [prepare yourself for impending death] he does provide hope by using the life vest and oxygen in case he survives this he is also probably praying to god that she changes her mind [And the cabin erupts with religious conversions] when maybe he didn't believe in god before, so it's ironic the song doesn't really tell us the outcome explicitly, unless you are pessimistic and take the sign of the water coming in as death but for the optimistic, we can just wonder if he got out before he drowned |
