Fleet Foxes – The Shrine/An Argument Lyrics 13 years ago
For me, the first half of the song is spoken from a place of false peace.

He has lost her, and convinces himself that it doesn't really matter (sun light over me no matter what I do). The fountain and pennies are perhaps an attempt to wash away or buy off his regrets and sins against the woman he loved. The apples may be symbolic of other women he's had in her absence. All are cold and sweet, all are the same.

The second half is where things get honest. The morning sun is too bright to hide his lies in. I think she took only the letters he wrote to her, leaving the others. She drove into the sea and drowned (the sea washes my name from your throat), unable to bear the shame and betrayal.

Now he is alone with his tree of apples, but they are all hard and sour and green (nowhere else is the color revealed). In despair he lays down at the water's edge and gives up his life to try and redeem himself. perhaps he might one day be worthy of reuniting with her in the afterworld.

YES. This. I was a child of the 80's, and I watched this play out then too. It's much worse this time around though.

I think yours is the correct interpretation. There are many such tales in which this happens. Wouldn't suprise me if this was the inspiration here.

Coil – Triple Sons and the One You Bury Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like this is a description of several things! Taken literally, it may be instructions for a death ritual. Taken symbolically, it's an Alchemist's code. Taken as Metaphor, it's a condemnation and exploration. I don't have room to go into all of it, but here's the idea for one.

3 suns/sons: The 3rd Equinox in a year
The BLACK mirror: traditionally used by Alchemists and Sorcerers to see the Unseen.
The gold-painted galleon:it's not really gold, it just looks that way, perhaps the Moon?
The Resonance: a specific chant or song to set the Trance in motion.
The Yew Berry: Yew trees are sacred, and also poisonous. The berries are bright red, symbolizing blood, renewal, sacrifice. This ties into "Swallowing the Dead";making it possible to be reborn through the sacrifices of the living.
Mercury was considered a powerful cure-all in ancient times, almost a holy agent. It may have been added to a potion intended to inspire visions. It could also be a way to announce "I have Trancsended the mundane."
