sounds like a break up song. First she admits her feelings, unfamiliar feelings to her, while he is breaking up with her. The chorus then is her wondering what went wrong, and then wondering if she can fix it properly (and not just delay it by offering sex) - lights turned off = sex. Lights turned on = actually dealing with whatever problem is the cause of the breakup. The second verse is about how much it hurts for her, and how she wishes he would stay. The last verse is about how she wishes that he could feel how she does with metaphors of how she will deal with this all. All the while, the chorus breaks in with wondering how she can fix this .. perhaps its a relationship she knew was not requited, and she cared for him and he wanted to leave but she knew he only stayed for the sexual/physical benefits of the relationship, and now she is realising this and needs to find out and fix what is really the issue. |

I think the most poignant line in the song is "why I was the one worth leaving". There are several different types of heartbreak, many to do with others being careless with your heart and hurting you in ways you never thought were possible. And there is the heartbreak that comes with breaking the heart of someone you care about and love because of something stupid you did, or because of other reasons why you can't be with them. I think the line I quoted, was in reference to a person not being able to commit themselves to a relationship with someone they truly cared about and loved, and at the same time was torn for so long because they knew what leaving them would do to this person. They knew how much it would destroy that person and they knew the pain it would cause, and yet, the alternative, the long game, there was only more pain. So they had to make the difficult choice and end things, and break their loved ones heart. And that person who was hurt, despite how much, has to remember that for them to be someone worth hurting like that, that the other person must have loved them fiercely, and that one of the most difficult forms of heartbreak is when it is not you who has to bear the pain, but the one you love. I for one have felt a few times in my life, that I would rather be the one to be hurt, than to be the one to break a loved ones heart. To be on either end is difficult. But that's the perspective that comes to mind when I hear that line. |

I have been listening to 3eb for years and years and only just discovered this song. I feel this song is all about regret and thinking about a past relationship. Regretting mistakes made, wishing things could work out. The lyrics in this song are like most of SJ's work, beautiful. 66,000 miles an hour is the approximate speed of the planet earth as it orbits the sun. To me its a reference to time and how despite any feelings, any decisions, anything, it just keeps going on. The line 'hanging onto your dress like a little boy' is so powerful of the feeling of longing and regret when you realise you've lost the woman you really love. It really reduces you to that. I could go on. The lyrics are just so powerful. |
