Seems to be a monologue. It's a search, or rather, an act of conforming to one's inner-self. He is talking to the inner him, that he kept away from everyone except himself. His inner-self "pulls him down" because it knows that what he is doing would not benefit him. However, many times, it is common for us to deny our inner-self, instead opting to do what seems to be better. In the end, he lost everything due to his denial. Therefore, he approaches his inner-self and begs it to lead the way, as it is an integral part of him, and that he can't survive without it. As his problems never end, he comes to rely on his inner-self. "Search for the answers i knew all along" and "Pain so familiar and close to the heart" indicates strongly that he is talking about his inner-self. It should be obvious, since when something happens, sometimes there's just this little person in your mind that keeps telling that it's wrong, and your emotions seem to comply with that person. However, many times we tend to ignore them. But, inevitably, you will have to come to trust that person, if the result follows suit, as the singer did. "Holding the hand that holds me down I forgive you, forget you, the end" The bridge basically means that he has come to walk hand in hand with his inner-self, because only through it can he gain control of his life. He forgives it because it has been showing the right things to do to him. He forgets it as it is not a separate entity within him anymore, but is assimilated into him, ie becoming one with his inner-self. |

From my eyes, the persona is mocking someone because even though he advised him not to take this particular path (as someone who had taken the same path in life), this certain someone insist on taking it. In the end, the certain someone ended the way the persona expected him to. First verse focuses on how the persona questions himself as to how he got into such a horrible situation. This is a way of telling that someone that if you take that path in life, you will, at some point, end up questioning yourself just like the persona did. Therefore the persona is advising the person BEFORE he is to make a decision so that he may have a brighter future. "Please monsieur remember, don't tell me how to get somewhere better" is basically a sarcastic statement. When the person he is advising retorts and says that this particular path in life will make his future brighter, the persona disagrees, as HE himself had been in that situation, so HE would know better. The whole chorus seems to be a monologue from my point of view. The persona is telling himself not to bother advising people because they will take the path to doom anyway, for whatever reason. However, he knows that the position he was in before he made the choice was MUCH better than what became of him now. Nonetheless, since people wouldn't listen anyway, he shouldn't be wasting his effort and breath. I particularly like the phrase "Did you think you could make it on your own?", because what he is trying to say really shines through this phrase, which is that if you don't listen to your superior's advice, you would regret it. 2nd verse deals with how the persona being advised would get himself hurt because of his curious nature to travel in that particular path. Even before he took the path, the persona felt that he had no real conviction in following that path, instead just doing it for the heck of it. Therefore the persona gives up on advising him. "So give it up!" is strong because the persona argues that in following that path, he is giving up his life, or wasting his life. The bridge has 2 possible meanings. The first one is where the persona believes that whatever advise he gives will not be conveyed by the opposite party, therefore it means nothing. Another interpretation would be that, when the person being advised on goes back to his advisor and tells him about his horrible situation, the persona feels that it doesn't anything to him anymore as he had ALREADY advised him against taking that particular path before this, therefore he would not be surpised nor would he take sympathy on that particular person. This sarcasm-filled song just makes me great, just like a lot of other sarcastic rock songs :D. Take Mysery loves its company for example. |

| Circa Survive – Act Appalled Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Extra note: Perhaps he only started to realise the whole thing when he saw other people lying in order to preserve the well-being of their relationships. He then wanted to be different from other people, NOT for the sake of being different, but for the sake of him getting back on track with life. And hence, the song was created. | |

In my opinion, it's a monologue. The person is trying to convince himself or herself to tell the truth, even if things may not go his or her way. This is because he's got nothing to lose by doing so, as he has been trying to get back on track with his life, "I've trying to get back to the center, and I'm sure it's not like it was before". The first 4 lines in the first verse basically describes a lying process, and the person is asking himself whether he ready to change what he has always been doing, that is, lying. "What makes you so scared? Maybe you're mistaken by someone who cares", the person is asking himself whether he's afraid that he would lose someone who cares about him by telling the truth. Losing a loved one has never been an easy thing to face, that explains why the person insist on telling lies, in order to preserve the well being of his relationships. "If you remember, remember" is just the person trying to remind himself of what he has been trying to achieve, that is to get back on track with his life. First 2 lines of 2nd verse is also a lying process, where sooner or later the person would know whether it's really 'water' or otherwise. The bridge is where the person tells himself to be patient and persistent in telling the truth. Due to the way we are programmed to explain a situation, it usually results in hurting other people's feelings. Therefore, we must try and try to explain in a way that they will accept us until we succeed. The chorus in the end indicates that the person, deep inside, really wants to step out of the his garden of lies. It took awhile for me to think my interpretation, but in fact it seemed really simple. Anyway, I like Anthony's high pitched singing. Don't you? :D |

Yes, everyone has the right to speak their mind, and I will not deprive you of that. However, your interpretations do not seem to connect. That is to say that they are all quite unrelated, therefore it is hard to understand the song as a whole through your interpretation. For a start, at first you are talking about a salute to the president. Then, you talk about someone having their dreams and promises broken. Worse yet, you then talk about suicide. While some of your opinions seem valid, I failed to establish a connection between the points. Lastly, I wouldn't say that he is surrendering, because the way the chorus is presented sounded more like an advice, rather than someone carrying it out. Good try, keep it up :). |

From my point-of-view, it's an advice from a lover. The situation is such that their relationship may come to an end soon. Therefore the persona is giving an imagery as to what would happen if his lover keeps on doing what she is doing, in hopes that she would surrender and therefore renew their relationship. Both of them have something in common, namely the fact that they are very convinced with their own ideas and opinions, as well as having a great sense of pride, as can be conveyed from "Do you know what's worth fighting for, when it's not worth dying for? Does it take your breath away" and "Does the pain weigh out the pride?" respectively. But it is due to that that they are in constant conflict with each other. The line "Did someone break your heart inside?" indirectly tells the person that she is killing herself (and the relationship) by being too persistent with her own thoughts and pride. He knows it for sure because he was doing the same thing, except that at some point he realised it and is now trying to make her realise it as well. The repetition of "You're in ruins" implies strongly that she is dying on the inside because of her conviction and pride. The chorus basically prompts the person to surrender; "lay down your arms" means to drop your weapons ie your arguments, whether it is valid in one way, or in many ways, hence "one, 21 guns". "Throw up your arms into the sky" is similar to what people do when cops say "freeze!", which is to surrender. "You and I" strongly indicates that if she is willing to surrender, that he would do the same. The 2nd verse talks about what would happen at the end of the relationship. It talks about how the relationship cannot be pieced together no matter how she argues and that all that she's ever believed doesn't even seem to matter anymore. "Nothing's ever built to last" tells her that his patience is wearing thin, thus if this continues, their relationship would have to end. The bridge harps on the possible aftermath, where she is alone and tries to see why their relationship, which she burned, actually ended. "..Stone" refers to their relationship that would never come back, and she is trying to convince herself that she had done nothing wrong to deserve it, as a result, get hurt even more. The second part of the bridge stills refers to the aftermath, telling her that there is no second chance in their relationship, and that at the end of the day, she will realise that something is missing despite ALL the arguments that she went through to convince him that she's right. In saying so, the persona hopes to convince her that surrendering and complying is the best course of action. Overall the song is quite good :D. My friend can't get enough of it. There goes my two cents. |
